So I took apart my protank atomizer tonight and rebuilt it using .5mm ribbon wire and 1.5mm ekowool. 1.3/1.4 ohms and much cleaner taste.

6 wraps around 1 layer of ekowool and I placed a second layer on top. I plan on doing a few more to see which setup works best. I'll do a doubled over wick and a 2mm wick in both configurations as well.
I just got some 1mm Ekowool today. I rolled up some SS mesh and worked it inside the ekowool then gave it 4 wraps of 32g Kanthal. Got 1.7 ohm's, not bad. The taste is excellent and vapor production is decent, but it doesn't seem to give the real strong ripping crackle that I love.
I really want to try it but I already have over 200 feet of regular kanthal and over 100 of regular silica. Derp.
I've not heard of anyone doing that, how did that come about? I may try that with some 3mm since it's hollow anyway. Are you oxidizing the SS or just stuffing it in as is?

I like the flavor that I get from wicking with ekowool much better than standard silica.
Looks pretty good. I have been thinking about getting some of this ribbon wire to mess around with. Its hard to tell from your pics but that looks pretty tight in there. How tough was it to get it all in there? I'm looking to make about the same ohm coils as you got and am trying to figure out which size wire to get.
I would go with .5mm on the ribbon wire, any wider and it will be difficult to get it down in there. With this setup it was pretty easy to fit. Just make sure you wrap the coils close together. Kidneypuncher.com and Stormysvaporceller both have A1 kanthol ribbon wire an both have ekowool at reasonable prices. I think I ordered my ribbon wire from stormy and my ekowool from kidneypuncher. both are great vendors if you have yet to deal with them.
How are you getting past the rubber grommet from being scorched due to the coil ? I tried rebuilding the Protank, and I tasted rubber in my vapor.
I saw modders make the same style wick for their genesis style RBA's.
On my first try, I didn't oxidize the wick. I worked fine but I felt like the ends may have been touching the PT base and draining the battery quicker. On my second try, I used a smaller mesh wick and oxidized lightly with a lighter. So far, it's working great. I do need to experiment with the wick size and layers of ekowool. the wick seems to get a bit too saturated after sitting for bit, thus not heating up so well.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like .5mm is what I will be getting. I guess if I can manage to fit 11 wraps of 28ga kanthal in one of these heads this shouldn't be a problem. I plan to use cotton as all the silica I have tried has left a bad taste in my mouth, literally. One more question if you don't mind. Did the ribbon wire give you any problems with the grommet as it is flat not round?

If the problem is what I think you are talking about I wrapped a coil around a short piece of ekowool and then placed another section of it on top of the coiled wick just laying on top freely.
It popped uo a bit, but not enough to cause any problems. I think twisting it a bit so that it lies flat against the inner surface should leave it better suited to be help between the steel and grommet than round wire.
I don't know if I could go through 50' of wire in my life, but I sure can try!

There is definitely a difference in taste. It'll make you want to throw away all of your silica... maybe.

I have over 100 feet of regular silica lol. It's good quality though from pbdragon. If I really like ekowool I'll unload it on the classies at a loss of course.
