Kanger Protank Snapping and Crackling Using Cotton Wick

Hello Everyone,

I tried my first Kanger Protank coil build using Peaches and Cream #4 cotton as recommended by various individuals who have done this rebuild. My reason for migrating to cotton is related to the health issues of silica discussed in many threads. Coil resistance is 2.4 ohms; coil constructed using a 4-40 machine screw. I am experiencing severe snapping and crackling with spitting into the mouthpiece using 4 watts of power.

I am wondering if cotton does not have the same wicking characteristics as does a silica wick. Would, for instance, doubling from one strand of cotton to two strands be of any help. Anyone who has suggestions using cotton as a wicking material would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've rebuilt several Protank coils using the Peaches and Crème. It did take me a while to get it right but here's what I do. The yarn has 4 strands. After making my coil (I use a LARGE needle to wrap it) I take a length of 2 of the 4 strands and pull them into the coil using a bead threading needle (Hobby Lobby). In pulling them through, I now have 4 strands in the coil. After getting the coil in place I put 2 strands on top for flavoring wicks. After putting the newly rebuilt coil in your tank, let it sit for a few minutes (to absorb the juice) before vaping. Also, don't inhale the first "several" puffs. Even after boiling the yarn and burning the wire first, it still has a funny taste at first. Goes away quick though.

I'm vaping now on a rebuilt cotton wick coil (on some mighty fine DIY RY4 I might add). The resistance is 1.8 ohms and I've got my Vamo set to 3.7v. That comes out to 7.6 watts, and it's perfect. You should be vaping at between 6-8 watts (depending on the juice).

When I first got the Vamo, I started off using the watts setting but found that I have more "control" using the voltage setting. If you have both watts and voltage settings, google vaping power chart 2.0.

One more thing. I'm using 32g wire. If you're using the same, your coil is slightly larger than mine. You might try adding one or two more strands to the coil wick. Play around. You'll get it right.
