So, what's the ECF consensus on these?

I've had mixed results with the ones that came with my Kanger Topbox. The nickel 0.15 ohm, (device measures it at 0.2 ohms), one worked well on TC mode, (500 deg F), for about ~36 hrs, then the flavor became muted to the point I couldn't taste it, and although it still produces vapor and has no "burny" taste, the vapor, (and the tank), are much cooler than before, on the same temp setting. o_O ~36 hrs of use for one of these coils kind of.. sucks.

So, I changed to the 0.5 ohm, (device measures it at 0.56 ohms), Clapton coil, and although it was immediately producing good vapor in the ~25-35W range, the flavor was extremely muted. I read about wicking problems with these coils so I poked a couple holes in the cotton with a sewing needle. After doing this, I get more flavor, but now the coil wants to occasionally spit, so I've adopted the habit of blowing through the drip tip for ~half a second after firing, before starting to inhale.

I've been observing the coil down through the drip tip with everything assembled and in place, (with a flashlight), and it looks as though sometimes a tiny bit of juice enters the coil and sits in there a second or two after I've finished taking a pull off the tank. Is this "flooding"? There has been no juice leaking outside the tank at all, during any of the above.

What do you guys think? I thought I was being careful, but maybe I got slightly too aggressive with the needle? Should I avoid this needle treatment altogether on new coils, or should I buy the older OCC ver 2 coils instead, (as I've seen many ppl recommend on other sites)?

Regardless, next payday, I think I'll buy another tank. Any recommendations on those? The Mutank, Griffin, and the Bachelor, (this one seems a bit more basic, and I'm leaning toward it), all look pretty good to me. I'm not averse to building coils, but don't have much experience doing so, (or any of the Coilmaster tools), yet.

ETA: also, the juice. I've been using max VG stuff from MBV, (Blubacco and Bananas Foster, which are actually pretty decent), without any flavor shots. I think that also might be a mistake. I'm thinking 80/20 VG/PG or 50/50 with 1 flavor shot might be wiser when I reorder, with these coils at least.

TIA for any and all advice. :)

Started out with the old Square OCC's on my subtank then moved up to the SSOCC's with my toptank. Other than a few instances where their SS and NI200 coils only lasted 2 days (these were only the ones that came with the subbox and toptank kits) I've never ever had a problem with any of these coils bought in packs of 5 though and this includes OCC, SSOCC, and the newer fatter SSOCC's with the fatter body and 3 juice holes.

From my experience, I've only had a problem with the 2 TC coils that come with the kits. As far as buying them in packs of 5, I've had Zero issues with any of them. Even my 5 pack of the more slender and older Nickle SSOCC's were fine.. each coil lasting a minimum of 2 weeks or more.

Surprised it shows .2 for you, that nickle coils reads 0.23 for me! That SS coil also reads as high as 0.63 when it should be 0.5. For some reason, all the other nichrome coils all read as they should, it's just the NI and SS that do this.

I don't bother manipulating the cotton of these coils at all. Just like you, it has caused nothing but spitting issues. Still have not even bothered to mess with the RBA yet and I've been vaping for almost 6 months now.

I wouldn't know about MBV and their flavor shots as I'm not a fan buying unsteeped juices only to have to wait 2 weeks or more to use them. I did however, get a sample pack just this once from MBV since I have so much juice now, I can afford the time to steep them.

Thanks for the extensive response, Just Want To Quit. :)

All of the coils that came with my Topbox Mini have 3 juice holes, so I guess they're the newer SSOCC's.

At this point, I suspect the problems I've had with muted flavors have almost as much to do with the juice I'm using, (max VG, no extra flavor, no steep time), as they do with the coils. I'll lay off of the needle treatment with any new coils I buy.

Yeah we got lucky we got the new ones! :) My friend picked up a toptank mini kit and got the older more slender SSOCCs without the 3rd juice hole. I prefer max VG as well and haven't had any problems really with leaking. Have you?

Here is a brief explanation from Sweetvapes showing the difference in case you didn't know already. I just found out about this a few days ago!

Kanger Upgraded SSOCC Coils - Kanger Coils - Kangertech - Tanks & Coils

They are even trying to get rid of their remaining "older SSOCC's" over at sweet-vapes and have a sale going on right now!

I've had no issues with leaking either. These are the first max VG juices I've tried, and since I seem to be prone to vapor's tongue, I'm thinking that at least 20% PG might be more to my liking.

Thanks much for the responses and the link! :)
