It's fairly easy to remove the top piece of the coil. I use a small vise to hold the main body of the coil and a pair of pliers with some small rubber pieces so I don't mark up the top. Just twist the top part while lifting a little and it will come off fairly easily. Once the top is off and the bottom pin and insulator removed you can lift out the coil without damaging it and rewick it and reinstall it. The advantage of reusing the coil is that it is a resistance/non resistance coil instead of making a full resistance coil. The original coil doesn't transfer heat to the bottom insulator because of the non resistance wire legs. Wrapping coils with all resistance wire still works well, I just prefer to reuse the original coil. If you use Rips building method you will deform the original coil by pulling it out of the bottom and I haven't had any luck reusing the original coil pulling it out that way. But both methods will work if you just want to make a new coil.
