Kangertech Subbox mini Issue or warning!

Good Day Everyone,

I just wanted to share my experience with the subbox mini. When I first got this device I was so impressed, small, light weight, easy change of batteries with long battery life. Had it for about 2 months and bought another Subtank mini, nano and plus. Other than the leaking from those tanks I was really happy with it. However after I bought the Subtank Plus I noticed it was a little too big and moved around on the 510 thread. After about 2 months one day I went to change tanks which I did a couple times a day and the tank would not screw on. I tried another and same issue. I even went back to my Plus and still would not screw on. Because the Plus was so big it stripped the threads on the Subbox and made it totally unusable. This really upset me and I ended up buying 2 new mods a EVIC VT and a Invader mini temp control. Both seem good so far and they both hold all the tanks great. Just a warning or experience.

The basic problem is fixed centerpin on the mod.
Unfortunately it is still quite common on regulated mods.
The small size of the 510 interface doesn't help either.

510 threads are 510 threads, the size of the tank does not matter. The KBox mini does have it's issues, but IF this happen, it was likely your fault. I am also not sure how this is a KBox mini issue, you said the ST Plus was the problem?

THE ISSUE IS that the Subbox mini does not hold the Kangertech Plus tank without it shifting around. That is going to strip the threads on a 510. Because the base on the subbox mini was not large enough to support the base. Just curious how you think that is my fault?

The KBox mini's top is 22mm, the ST Plus has a diameter of 25mm, I find it hard to see how 22mm would have a problem supporting 25mm. Stripped threads are usually always caused by cross-threading, or over-tightening. There are the mods with very cheap metal, but that isn't the case with the KBox mini.

I guess what I am questioning then, is how you would advise on how the threads became stripped? I only used 3 tanks all kangertech on a kangertech mod. I am not a newbie to vaping! I did not join this forum or post to be called out! This is my experience and sharing it with others.

Have you ever felt any binding when screwing a tank on to the mod? Threads are either cut right or cut wrong, they work or they don't. If you haven't overtightened it, and I doubt you did that, there is very little that can go wrong with them. Check your tanks carefully if there is binding. A stainless tank's threads are stronger than the threads in the mod and are capable of damaging them. A small burr can wear the mods threads quickly if you change tanks often. Other than bad threads or overtightening, crossthreading is about the only thing that would damage the threads. Have you ever started to install a tank a little bit crooked? Once damage is started, it will only get worse. When I got my SubTank mini, the threads were a little rougher than I like, so I cleaned them up with a jewelers file. A little burr on the tanks threads can cause excessive wear on the mod. Also, do you wipe the threads on the tank off before you install it on the mod? If it gets fine metal shavings in the threads, that is like having sandpaper on it and will cause excessive wear.

Never had issues with putting tanks on or off, Always went on fine except with the Kangertech Plus it always rattled around. Almost like it was too top heavy for the mod. I clean my mod and my tanks everytime I take them off and never noticed any shavings, It was the strangest thing as it was tight on there all day. Went to switch a tank and just kept turning, Very odd. No connect made with the threads. I even took it apart to see if I could tighten the 510 but the way it was designed you cannot not do it as it is surrounded by very think metal. I just wanted to make sure nobody else ran into this, or at least went an bought a plus to only have the same thing happen to them.

The ST plus is a big tank, but if it screws down tight against the mod it should have enough support to keep it from wiggling and damaging the threads. It may be too big for the mod, I'm not familiar with how the threads are held into the SubBox so it could have been too much for it to hold.

Are the threads in the mod worn/damaged or is the threaded insert just loose?

In this case, I would say user error cause the stripping. You don't have to take it personal, I am just basing my opinion on my experience with the device and your claim that it cannot support a 25mm atty, or that a 25mm atty somehow caused it to strip.

When you post a thread expressing negative feedback on a public forum about a widely used product, regarding a problem that is not common, you should expect feedback. When you post things like this, people with no experience with the device read it and think it is an actual problem, when in fact it is far more likely it is something you did.

If you didn't over-tighten it, then it sounds like you put some pressure on the 510 connection with the tank on it. Whether you bent your leg while or bumped it was in your pocket, sat on it, or whatever, something like that could have cause the issue you described. Not that the ST Plus is simply too big and/or heavy. People put ST's on eGo spinner batteries, which will be fine as long as you do not put pressure on the connection point between the tank and the mod.

It's a common problem.
It's certainly not unique to the kbox or subtank.

Some people solve the problem buy basically never unscrewing their topper from their mod; basically they buy several toppers and mods and leave one attached to the other and not cause problems by repeatedly screwing and unscrewing on those 510 threads.

The 510 thread is a cigarette sized thread; meanwhile tanks have gone past cigarsize but the old cigalike sized 510 thread is a de-facto standard, and its one of the main sources of problems for new vapers.

i myself am using a 3d rda on a nemesis with a kick - truehybrid, 20mm threads, no 510 thread.
Before I got the 3d, i used to use m21x1 topcaps permanently threaded onto my toppers, and screw those onto m21x1 threaded mods - chi you, king and astro; that way I avoided screwing/unscrewing on 510 threads;

And before that, I'd leave my tank bases permanently on my vamos; and the collar/beautyring at the top locked firmly upward onto the tank

Exactly. Design error continuing to use the little 510 connector with big tanks, not user error as some here have claimed.

As edyle said, it's a problem with the 510 and not your specific device or atomizer.

What you can do is just be careful when screwing down atomizers, if it catches incorrectly before it threads in, back it off and try again. A great way to prevent cross threading is to clean your threading regularly. I like to use polishing cloths on the atomizer threading as well as the device threading and it keeps the threading very smooth.

Or, if you're willing to live with a little extra height, put a thread adapter on the mod and leave it there. With a tapered cone on the ego threads that you cinch up against the 510 threaded topper.

Any damage is then confined to the adapter and topper, the mod is fine.

Great idea.
