Speaking of coils got a question here: So I got the Griffin rta, I put dual claptons in the velocity style deck. I wicked and juiced. She runs at .29-.34 ohms. Got here up to 50 Watts. Then POP, and horrible inhale. So check the coils, one coil got snapped off. It actually blew apart. So recoiled it and the same thing happened. Anyone have an idea of how to fix this?

Wish I could help, Brother... but I don't mess with claptons. Hell, I hardly ever do twisted coils anymore... typically just plain, straight wire seems to do the trick for me these days.

*time to throw out a little bait for Kev*

Soooo... I'm just sittin' here at my desk sucking on some Sweet Nipples... MMMMmmmmm...

I stopped by the vape shop last night to pick up a bottle of juice... every now and then I do that so I can find inspiration for new juices... this one is by Vapegoons and the description was "Honeydew Pop Rocks"... I just loaded up the Target with it, and damn this is some good stuff!

Has anybody seen the Wismec Theorem tank? It uses a fancy pre-built coil, but it's an RTA. I thought it was pretty interesting... may have to pick one up at some point.

I checked MVS, but they're out of stock... for $25 (give or take), it might be worth getting one just to try it out. Just might have to keep an eye out and find me one!

I've been drooling over this for a couple of weeks, waiting for it to be available.

Do you actually have an open (measured with DMM) between the posts without any coils installed? Could you have a hotspot on one of the coils?

What kind of wire? If kanthal, can you dryburn to check for even heating?

*small rant*

Self evaluations suck.

That is all.

I am Kween of the Universe! I need no stinkin' "Self-Evaluation"! I am wondrous and fantabulous, and you are all mere peons in my realm!

There, put that on the self-eval

Somehow I don't think that would work lol.

I'm leaning more towards this one at this point! At least for today

I know electricians that think "short" describes any electrical wiring problem. Kudos to you! :)

LOL - point behind that is to make sure that there is no short somewhere on the deck ;)

If you're getting a true open without a coil, then you should get proper resistance with the coils installed..... I just did an end-around on that question :D

In what you're describing, it kinda sounds like something's shorting out somewhere. Is the coil/set screw not making proper contact? I know you rebuilt, but could there be something in the wire that's flakey?

Just throwin' some kweshuns....

Clapton wire can be finicky. On a sharp bend the inner wire might be over-stressed, break or be near to breaking; the current is then all shoveled onto the wrap wire.

A hot-spot check is good. For kanthal or SS wire Install the coil, but leave the tank body and wick out. Fire at low power (10ish watts), see if you have a bright spot at any bends. If it's not enough power to get any glow, nudge it up a couple watts.

The coil may work for a bit, then fail, if it has a weak spot. Thermal stress when firing if there's a already a weak spot in the wire.

That's why I put a twisted wire in my "clapton" tf-rca head, and am okay with a clapton coil in the -r1 - I tend to get a hotspot on the bend to the RCA posts, but manage a smoother setup on the -r1.

LOL - Purdue did give me a Degree in Electrical Engineering a long time ago in a land far, far away ;) I haven't used any of it in over 20 years, but there have been a couple of concepts that I can recall once in a great while ;)

And sorry - I completely flaked that it was YOU responding instead of Skully when I typed that previous answer
