If the vape is stifled, the total wicking is to much and/or the coil is to close to the deck.
The cotton ring should not be blocking air flow past the wick at all.

Gunk building in cotton may be coloring from e-liquid. As I DIY and most of my liquids are very light I'm not getting much variance from the wick color. Could possibly be caramelized liquid depending on heat production in chamber.
