I've been doing a lot of research into batteries, mech mods, RBA's and such lately. I bought an HCigar Kayfun 3.1, some Sony hybrid batteries, ohm meter and volt meter. I had less room to work with than I thought going into this. Didn't help that the lighting was less than adequate either. But on the second coil build (we won't talk about the first one, it looked like Helen Keller made it) I wound up with a 1.77ohm coil using 4 wraps of 32 gauge kanthal wire.

I'm doing everything I should be doing, checking the battery periodically to see how much power is left in it, making sure that nothing is getting too hot. I'm just so happy I got it on the second try and that it's vaping like a champ, figured I'd come here and share! There is hope for any newbies out there! If my addlepated twit self can do this, you can too! Just read read read and ask ask ask, I couldn't have made it this far without the community's input and support!

I'm looking at other ways to build coils, apparently you can fold silica wick over on itself and build a coil that way too. SOOO much fun, whole new world now lol

Welcome! Yep, I remember getting my first Kayfun. It was really a game changer for me after rebuilding Kanger ProTank 2's. Congratulations. I have found that the Kayfun is remarkably adaptable to anything you do build wise; I have built everything from sub ohm twisted wire coils to straight up micro coils, vertical, horizontal, double. They all work, and work well. Nowadays, I am using a 2.0 ohm micro coil, wicked with cotton. It vapes very nicely, and it's a very easy build to do.

A bit of advice for you. You might want to pick up some 30 and 28ga kanthal and try some micro coils wicked with cotton. There are a lot of resources on ECF to point you in the right direction. I never wicked a Kayfun with silica, but I have tried ecowool. I have found organic cotton to be the best for me, flavor wise. I would just try different things and find that sweet spot. Best of luck to you!

I was actually just lamenting the fact I didn't purchase more than one gauge of kanthal or any cotton!!! I went with silica because someone suggested it was a good place to start, and they were right! Micro coils look like they might be a little easier to pull off, just wrap the wire around something like a screwdriver and then pull the cotton on through, I don't think I could do the same with silica wick, even if I tried (which I probably will anyway, hope that doesn't go south too quick!) Where's the best place to pick up some organic cotton? do I have to boil it or anything?

Congratulation! I was in your shoe a couple months back, the only difference was that I suceed on my first rebuildable tank "Kayfun" Hcigar 3.1 at 1.3 ohms. The hcigar kayfun work great except for the fill valve. I unable to fill e-juice through that slot. But that is irrelevant, as long as it Snap, crackle, and pops upon firing :vapor:

I was wondering if I was the only one that had an issue with the fill valve, I don't have any trouble filling it from the top though thanks to all the youtube I sat through while I waited for this thing to get here! You have any advice on how long the silica wick should be? I'm not sure I've used enough. Can't recall the length exactly right now, and don't want to open my kayfun back up lol

Congrats on the build. I also recommend cotton, incredibly easy, and a bag of 100 balls will likely last the better part of your lifetime, I must've rewicked my kayfun 30 times this week trying new flavors (dripper on the way to make that easier) and haven't used half of 1 ball for that.

I got my cotton (organic of course) off amazon for 2 dollars and change. Maxim is the brand, no boiling or anything, just open and go. I heard places like target, walgreens, cvs, etc carry it but I could not find it locally.

I just did a double barrel twisted microcoil build in mine, love it. Its here in the new members forum a few pages back. Kayfuns are pretty epic :)

Any organic cotton will do, I get mine from RiteAid and I do not bother boiling it. I get kanthal wire from Amazon, it comes from lightning vapes, about $7.50 for 100' shipping included. As for the 32ga you have on hand, you can twist 2 or 3 strands together which works really well. Like I said, most anything will work well in a Kayfun, it's just a matter of how much you feel like tinkering with it. I have found that the extra effort spent on exotic builds doesn't return enough for me performance wise. Some folks love to fiddle with stuff like that, and if you are one of them, then the KF is a great platform to do it on. Have fun.

I feel a trip to Walgreen's comin on... but by twisting two or three strands together, are you talking about the cotton or the wire? (I just got off work a few hours ago so I'm sorta brain dead). I kind assumed that the cotton came in little cotton balls or something XD

Edit: I'm going to Walgreens, coming home to crash, then when I wake up...the adventure continues. WITH COFFEE!!! What a wonderful way to spend my day off lol

Congrats on the build, just picked up my Kayfun 3.1 yesterday and LOVE it, only issue I have is the occasional dry hit, not sure if my juice is too thick to keep up with my vaping, or if I did something wonky but I get the odd dry hit.

I had that happen as well, once I think was due to how I wicked it and the other was because I ran out of juice when I wasn't paying attention lol No problems after the new coil build though! Also, it might be because the airflow is off just a little. I had to fiddle with mine for a few vapes to get it right.

Yep .. the kayfuns & russian style atomizers with cotton are very, very good.
After trying the usual carto's & other atty's & devices, Iv'e settled on a regulated gadget & the kayfun / Russian variant of atomizer as being the least fiddly, most reliable & best tasting tasting of all I tried.
Been coiling mine with a bit larger diameter ( .100 ) than the usual 1/16 micro coil. Why ? Because I found that the micro coil didn't last all that long before it needed cleaned or changed out.
Another tip I came across was foregoing the obsession of getting all the coils perfectly touching each other.
Wrap the coil in the usual manner & make somewhat of an effort to get all coils touching & firing from the center out, then carefully spread the entire coil just a bit to create some space between each wrap. I find that the wicks last twice as long by doing this & also wick better.

Just cut 3 lengths of 32ga, about 10" or so. Fold over one end, and pull all 3 ttight, then fold over the other end. Clamp one end in a vise grip, and the other in a drill chuck. Now slowly twist them together, but don't let them kink up. Wrap a coil with that as usual, but I use a 3/32" bit to do it on instead of 1/16. 10 wraps will have you in the .8 to 1.0 ohm range. Like this...

Walgreens - $2.99, bag of 80 organic cotton balls. The first one I took out of the bag has lasted about a week, so that bag should last over a year.

I tried it first not-boiled; then tried it boiled. The not-boiled tastes better, IMO, and someone somewhere on this forum pointed out that boiling them could actually introduce microorganisms, in the form of fungus, during the drying process. So I'll stick with not-boiled.

PS: I agree with what you said about "if I could do it, anyone can!" Goes double for me; I'm clumsy, have shaking hands at times, and don't see well up close; I had to buy a new pair of reading glasses, and yesterday got one of those "helping hands" lighted magnifier thingies from Harbor Freight -- but it is indeed possible to build quite nice coils and get them wicked, even under those conditions.

It's not about having a thick wick, it's about getting just enough coverage that it wicks quickly enough to avoid dry hits. It's a little tricky to get it wicked right. I recommend Rip Trippers video on the chimney coil for the Kayfun. He shows a great example of how to do it. When I build mine, the coil is about 1 mm off the deck, and my wick fully covers the coil without interfering with the open hole on each side of the coil. That's key. If it's interfering with the hole closest to the air hole, you will get flooding.
