I have started playing with sub ohm vaping on my Kayfun 5. Currently using Clapton wire 26 ga and 30 ga stainless steel and mostly I am very happy with the results great flavour initially and lovely throat hit.
However I am finding that due to the heat generated by the coil the cotton is burning long after I've taken a vape and as a result the wicks are being burnt in the middle whilst the legs remain fine.
I'm using a 2.4 mil screw driver and roughly 4/6 wraps 6 on the burnt, currently trying 4 to try to reduce the problem.
I have tried 30 watts 25 even 20 and temp control to attempt to aliviate the issue but the problem with temp control is the coil retains its heat long after it's reached a temperature sufficient to burn the coil, so temp control doesn't work, it has helped but not prevented the issue from happening.
I'm currently using cotton bacon v2 as wick and it's nice and snug in the wick with a little wiggle room but certainly not loose and I'm using tonix 80/20 mix which appears to be wicking well as the legs are always saturated but the part inside the coil keeps getting burnt away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I've just bought 3 more bottles of juice for sub ohm vaping and don't want them to go to waste on my shelf, and finally I have the Kayfun airflow fully open which grimgreen didn't have any issues using with a Clapton coil, hence why I attempted a sub ohm build.
Thanks in advance

Also at a guess the residual heat in a clapton after firing will scorch the cotton. When you are not drawing on the kf wicking performance won't be as good. That said I'm sure it can done. You could also go sub using normal wire with equal results.

That is definitly the problem I've tried prolonging my draws to pull abit of extra air over the coil to cool it and it has helped, but I usually run out of breathe before I can completely cool it sonit stroll happens. And it can be done every review I've seen of the five is using a fused Clapton coil on the inside so I honestly can't work out what I'm not doing that they are. Been building for years and this is the first bit of trouble I've had since gennies were all the range.

Don't have the KF V5, but that's probably not a topper in which I'd use clapton wire. I might use 26g SS or Kanthal....

Might be too much coil mass holding residual heat.

I originally wouldn't have thought so either kayfuns have never been cloud throwers, however all the reviews I've seen are using Clapton so figured I'd give it a try, I've somewhat solved the issue two less wraps so currently using roughly 4 and a half wraps now just trying to dial in the flavour I'm getting lovely flavour round about 25 watts on a 0. 3 ohm build but as soon as the coil heats up it drops off a little but playing around will will solve this. No joke these Clapton coils actually remind me of heating elements in household heaters.
My biggest issue is the ramp up time for the coil kind of missing kanthal for almost instantaneous heat. Found using a nicer juice helps too, on another note the moo line of juices are lovely.

Well, you're making me reconsider getting a V5 :D I have the V3s, and I'm wrestling with them a bit. I like the size of them, but I have to figure out my dry hit issues (blech)

Thanks for your updates!

Cheers!

Honestly it's a cracking little atty and compared to the v4 so so simple fixes all of the rubbish that the v4 brought with it I have re realised how much certain things drove me mad. And all the issues I've had with the v5 have been from my own inaptitude towards building coils for it. No problem happy to help.

Why are you sub-Ohming on a V5? Okay…because that's what you want to do...I get it. While Kayfun's can produce a decent amount of vapor, they are primarily designed for flavor. Burning cotton means your high-n-dry… High on power - low on liquid. If you're into cloud-chucking, stick with using an RDA.

Kayfun:
1. Wrap a 3mm (ID) round Kanthal (or SS) coil to 1.0 to 1.5 Ohms. If using SS316/317, wrap to 1.0 Ohm.
2. Presoak the wicking. If the wicking is too thick, it will choke-off the flow. Make sure you "fluff" the cotton in the base of the V5.
3. Fill chamber and open to 2 1/4 turns, and release air from the evaporation chamber.
4. Start at 10 watts, and advance from there.

If you're using 80% VG, your fluid is likely too thick. Restrict 80% VG liquids to RDA use. Cut the mix to 50-50 PG/VG and enjoy! :)

I think the OP needs to start low in wattage and work up to find out where the K5 starts to starve the wick. Wet cotton doesn't burn through in the middle unless it's vaped dry.

Juice feed is obviously the problem. Open it up to max and back down until the wick isn't oversaturated. You'll know when it's right. Gurgling indicates an oversaturated wick. Close it down and vape to atomize the extra juice in the wick each time you make a change that results in gurgling.

If you raise the wattage, you need more juice flow to the wick. Start low in wattage and find the sweet spot for juice flow. As you raise the wattage, open the juice feed to compensate. Use TC control at 400F to prevent burning the wick while you experiment.

The k5 is fine with a sub ohm coil. It's nothing like the old ones. I run mine between .4 and .5 regularly. No issues at all.
OP....what you don't see from these reviewers is long term results. I can put a fused Clapton in a k5 and tell you how great it is too. But after several tanks, it'll likely have a burnt wick like yours.
Try a spaced coil... single strand. 24ga 6 wraps on a 2.5 mm bit is fantastic. Kanthal or SS...you pick. The flavor is every bit as good, if not better, than these fancy builds. Quick ramp up, quick cool down....it just works.
