According to VTA, Kentucky Passed a Vapor Tax. Not funny, but kinda funny because VapeNW moved from NV to KY when NV imposed a vapor tax (with a floor tax as I understand it). I wonder if they'll move their warehouse to another state, yet again. That would make at least 3 moves for them to avoid state laws/taxes.

From VTA:

KENTUCKY TAX BILL SIGNED INTO LAW
This week, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a one-year budget bill, rather than the typical biennial due to the pandemic. The budget bill includes a 15% wholesale tax on open systems (liquid & hardware) and a $1.50 per pod tax on closed systems. This law goes into effect on August 1st 2020. VTA will be providing an update shortly on the new vaping related laws that are going into effect.

I am so proud, we in Kaintuck are on the cutting edge of keeping our citizens safe against the ravages of epidemic vaping, keep it legal but make money on it.

I used to be in the "okay tax me for it but keep it legal camp." I no longer am I don't think. Not unless someone can prove to me the reasons it's not a harm reduction product etc.

In any case the wherever Kentucky is like doesn't appeal to me much no offense but now even less.

I will say the balance between taxation and like standard of living, IDK if we will ever figure it out, even the tiniest bit.

I'm not a supporter of "tax me but keep it legal" line of thinking either. However, when it comes to tobacco and "sinful behavior" it will always be taxed unfortunately. You can bet on it.

Any tax over a 5% is a sin in and of itself, though.

I figured this would be the case. I live in Kentucky so I'll see this when I go to my local vape shop. Keep it legal but tax it is inevitable whether we like it or not. So I'll take legal. 15% is kinda steep though. We know the whole issue with vaping is about money. My personal vaping costs per month are fairly minimal so figuring this tax into what I spend, I'm still coming out ahead than if I still smoked cigarettes. Last time I bought a pack of marlboros they were 6 bucks and change. Two of those every day and in a week I'd spend more than I do on vaping in a whole month or more.

I feel your pain when it comes to taxes,or atleast i felt it when i was a smoker.

Remember back in the day, money was tight so i had to switch from packs to buying bags of pipe tobacco to roll my own cigarettes, you know the machine and buying the empty tube with filters.
Well anyway, one day the owner of the tobacco shop calls me (was a friend of mine) and he says:
''i ordered a box of pipe tobacco for you''
im like WTH!! why!! just so you know a box had 100 bags of pipe tobacco and with a bag (100gr) i had enough for a week.

He then said that the goverment had increased the taxes on pipe tobacco since they figured out the shift people made from buying brand names of tobacco in a bag to pipe tobacco.

When the crisis hit Spain (among other countries, not just us) a lot of people shifted from buying packs of lets say marlboro to buying bags of marlboro and they would just roll their own cigs.
Goverment saw an increase in bags but decrease in sales of packs of cigs so they increased the taxes on the bags of tobacco...but then a lot of people shifted to bags of pipe tobacco.

Yeah it sucked compared to the regular tobacco we used before but it was way way cheaper,a 100g bag (enough for a week) cost me 3.90 euros, add another 2 bucks for the filters so i could smoke all week for the price of a pack and half of your regular brand of tobacco.

Goverment then once again saw the shift in buying habits and increased the taxes on bags of pipe tobacco, guess how much?

Oh let's just say it was about a 270% increase (if my math is right),what i bought for 3.90 euros or 4 and change now cost 13,14 or 15 euros...so yeah that happened.

So this is the way the goverment operates all over the world, now when it comes to cigarettes yeah ok they are harmful so tax the hell out of it.
But vaping? come on,they just want a piece of the pie, they arent thinking in our well being, they just want to make up for the lost revenue from the sales of regular ol' tobacco.

Matter of time but dreading the day it happens here in Spain and it will happen, the goverments logic is this:

less cigarettes sold+more people vaping=less money for us.
Solution=let us tax the hell out of vaping products.

Even with cigarettes its disgraceful how much money the goverment makes, pack costs 4 euros or more and yet the cost of it is about 0.50 to 0.80 depending on the brand, that is just wrong.

p.s. sorry to hijack my own post, but if anyone is knowledgeable in the subject of drop in coils please throw me a bone:

I rolled my own cigarettes for years before I switched to vaping. It was dirt cheap. I smoked 2-3 packs a day and it literally cost me maybe $30/month. It was a different tax class so the tax was low. Right around when I switched to vaping there was talk that the tax for roll your own tobacco was going up, but I don't know if it ever did. However I heard that it's still very cheap (in the USA).

I'm glad this no longer affects me.... but 15% isn't as bad as taxing per mg so it's not as bad as it could be although, if the Fed's tax it at a per mg rate and then the state takes their cut of 15% after the per mg Fed rate is added then people who buy instead of make are in for a world of hurt.

I personally know only two (used to be three, but one went back to cigs.. ) vapers and they are retail ejuice buyers. I am a moderator in the CASAA WV state group and AFAIK all or most of the members there are retail ejuice buyers also. All or most of the (few) vapers I have seen in the outside world are probably retail ejuice buyers as well. The last I knew there was a 7.5 cent per ml state tax on retail ejuice. I don't know and really don't care that much how much the state tax is now on retail ejuice. It's been close to two years that I've bought any retail ejuice and more than two that I've bought any from a B&M store here. I've been DIYing for close to five years and will do so until I die or stop vaping, whichever comes first..
