Again, thanks everyone. After going to a few of the sites recommended here, I've bought the 510 PCC kit. The individual components appeal to the cheapskate in me - I only replace the specific component that's worn, not a 2-in-1 deal. And I like the idea of the charger shaped like a regular pack of cigs. I also ordered some starter juice. At some point I may get into mods, I like to tweak things, but for right now I want something off the rack and standardized.

I know I'm going to get quizzed about this at work. I went to an e-book a few months ago and got nonstop questions about it. This is going to be a revisit of that, I'm sure.

Quick question related to the ultrasonic cleaning - we use IPA or ethanol at work to clean printed circuit assemblies all the time. The NASA soldering standards require it. It's safe for electronics, and gets rid of foreign material contamination very well, especially organics (like VG or PG). Hasn't anyone tried this? It seems like it would work for something that's just gummed up, and it shouldn't damage the electronics in the assembly. Again, cheapskate talking. And I'm willing to be the guinea pig if it hasn't been done before. Possibly throwing away $5 for a damaged atomizer weighed against savings $5 over and over again seems like a small risk.

Cleaning just the atomizer in IPA is fine and should work well in an ultra sonic cleaner.

But again, I wouldn't put the battery part in the USC. I don't think the battery section is water/alcohol proof. Once it gets in there, you would never be able to dry it out completely without disassembling it.

The battery mechanism in most off the shelf PVs is not one single cell, but a series of small "hearing aid" type batteries. I don't know why I mentioned that.

The atomizer doesn't have any electronics in it. It is basically a glow plug. Shouldn't suffer any harm from an ultra sonic bath.

In my experience I find that manually blowing out the attys and soaking them in IPA every two weeks is sufficient to keep them operational and in good working order for a long time. Long time meaning 2-3 months. And that is with fairly heavy use.

The cost of replacing an atomizer every couple of months becomes insignificant when compared to the cost of a pack of cigs that only lasts a day, or as was in my case only a half a day. .
