I had a discussion about this in another thread and thought I'd fire this up. I do not (yet) DIY my juice, and I have experimented with many different juices from many different manufacturers.

From this I have observed that the only time I've seen the ratio of PG to VG has been on house blends.

Well established companies such as Epic juice (Apple Jax!!!), Ruthless, and Villain Vapors have all been in my rotation. Looking over the labels of these bottles, I see that they all note that the product contains PG and VG, but not at what ratio.
Any way of knowing? Is there a great e-juice database that I haven't come across? :p

These may be answered elsewhere (please re-direct me), but can I get a general idea based on the texture of the juice? I can see some are far thicker than others. Also, I heard a B&M employee touch on this, can the color give me a clue?

Lastly (I'm sure there's another thread for this, please vets, by all means), what does the PG/VG ratio do for my vaping experience?

Thanks from a semi-noob, full-blown enthusiast :D

Hello :) You can't tell the ratio by looking at the e liquid. When you start to DIY use an e liquid calculator such a juice me up. PG is a flavor carrier and gives more throat hit. VG is much less harsh and puts out the vapor. Also, the brand of VG I use for making e liquid is quite sweet, which is nice because I don't need to use as much sweetener. Most folks find a 50/50 mix of VG/PG is the ideal mix. Sometimes PG is too harsh for people (myself included) and using a 100% VG is the best option :) As far as the labeling goes: just about every brand I've ever ordered has the ratio on the bottle. Or you can pick the ratio when ordering. The only time this hasn't been the case is when I bought an emergency bottle at the local store.

I will try to make this as short and to the point as possible.

Most of the larger manufacturers have a 50/50 ratio in order to retain a slight cloud as well as throat hit.

PG gives you more throat hit (as well as nicotine, but pg gives more) and VG gives you bigger clouds but mutes flavor.

Your thicker juices will have a higher VG content, and some of the smaller manufacturers use a 70/30 vg/pg ratio. Also, when you order juices, alot of manufacturers allow you to input certain preset ratios to get your desired outcome.

I hear you. Seems a lot of makers are selling one proprietary mix, and keeping the info under seal.

Its hard to tell by looking because you don't know if heat treatments have been used, or if they're using a thinner like distilled water or grain alcohol. Color cant help at all to determine mix ratio, with the exception of nicotine content, and even that could only be observed over time as the nicotine oxidizes.

The only way I can narrow it down myself is by vaping it. VG vapor makes itself obvious, while PG is a tougher thing to discern.

As was said, and is true, most proprietary mixes with unlisted ratio are usually within 10% of 50/50 either way.

My diy liquids are all transparent (except for aromas and colorings) but you cant really see the nic content in my liquids since my nicotine is pretty much clear, has a very slight yellowish tint... Used to use a nic solution with half the nic in it... It was a darkish amber color... So it depends on the brand as well...

My DIYs also start out completely clear, with the exception of the flavorings (e.g. FW Juicy Fruit) which have a slightly colored tint. Regardless of brand, exposure to oxygen, heat, or sunlight will oxidize the nicotine and it will become a deeper yellow until it eventually becomes brown. Unless you never open it and keep it in a cool, dark place.

I use aroma and the tint of the Nicotine to clue me in on when some liquids are ready to go. Anything either Tobacco, bakery, or banana based I make needs a month of steeping and breathing treatments (plus the heat treatment on the day I make it) to reach the equivalent of the vendor liquid which I am attempting to duplicate.

Most of the vendors we use allow you to set your pg/vg ratio, some allowing more options than others. If I do not see pg/vg options, and cannot see anything on the website specifying what their "house" pg/vg ratios are, I email them. Any vendor that I have emailed has been nice enough to reply and let me know what pg/vg ratios they use.

There really isn't much of a proprietary justification for not disclosing PG/VG ratios. Some vapers are sensitive to PG and others to VG. I feel that vendors who refuse to disclose their ratios really don't deserve my business.

The only way I can see it being justified is as a deterrence to keep people from cloning their signature flavors, but you make a fine poi post about reactions to PG/VG(I really don't agree with this because there is such a small amount of people that are PG/VG sensitive, but you do make a good point with that). I'm sure that almost every vendor would divulge the information if prompted to however.

While we're on the topic, can anyone point me to some reputable online vendors? :vapor:

I get alot of juice locally and DIY some of my favorites but I do like the juice from Moon Mountain Vapor. I don't order often because I usually get 50ml or more of each flavor, but the sweet mother line of juices is my favorite.

I only like to buy juice from places that will at least tell you the ratio if not let you pick. Granted, they could be fibbing, but many people are pretty good about knowing what the different ratios feel like. For instance, I love a higher vg ratio because of the fluffy thick clouds, but I usually stick around 50/50 because my sweet minty flavors really do not seem to come through with too much vg...I need the pg to carry the flavor better it seems. Experimentation is where it is at, I think it is cool to try all different ratios with different flavors and see what satifies you.

I have to only shop from websites that allow me to customize my PG/VG ratio. I have an intolerance to PG so any PG makes my lips dry and burn. When i order I max my VG with no PG. The biggest thing I have noticed since going with 100% VG is a sweeter flavour. Much more smoother clouds. I don't miss the throat hit as much as I thought I would and I still get it occasionally. From one vaper to another I think everyone should try a max VG blend at least once. It works best I find on desert and bakery flavours.

I like Mount Baker also. I had 2 problems with them. 1, they sent a defective Mt3S. They sent a replace no questions asked no return of the defective one requested. They give 1 free bottle of random e-juice for orders over $15. They forgot on 2 of mine and when I told them they immediately credited my account with enough money to get two bottle on my next order. When Ifind a company with this level of customer service I'm thrilled!
