Why is it that designers don't actually seem to like women?

Speaking of which, Balenciaga was a genius. Most of his clothing was gorgeous and did, indeed, flatter women. But the collection at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art includes this masterpiece:

I think it would go nicely with the cheeseburger dress.

In the fifties you weren't dressed if you weren't wearing a hat. As a result, there are a lot of funny or whimsical hats from back then. My favorites are from a company called Bes-Ben -- I'll find some and post them. But, beyond the initial laugh, who in the world would want to have a head of lettuce?

ETA: BTW, I've recently been going through resale and auction sites for stuff from the 50s-70s for a project. I definitely have some stuff to entertain you, I just need to track down the pix.

lmao a couple tweaks here and there (texture, cinching, maybe some ripping) and I would SO wear that with leggings and some equally crazy boots.

Sounds like a plan. And I don't think it's YSL Haute Couture. It's just Rive Gauche so it would probably cost less than $1,000 (before tweaking.)

Something not to wear to the zoo
If they weren't high heels. The padding looks like they'd make very warm & comfy slippers.

More Bes-Ben hats.

ETA: Just found this:
Bes-Ben Hats, created by Benjamin Green-Field, who was known as Chicago’s Mad Hatter, was known for his inventive designs from 1940-1960. Clients included Elizabeth Taylor and Helen Hayes.

According to the caption from the Mohai Museum of History and Industry, this hat "uses artfully arranged painted turkey legs."

[His partner/sister was Bessie or something like that -- hence Bes-Ben]

"The prices for Mr. Green-Field's creations, which originally ranged from $37.75 to $1,000, tended to exclude women on a budget. However, every summer he would clean out his inventory for the new season at a midnight sale, marking down the hats to as little as $5. At 2 a.m., he would begin to toss the rest out the front door to waiting bargain-hunters. <snip> In 1987, not long before his death. he endowed the Benjamin B. Green-Field foundation in order to improve the quality of life for children and the elderly of Chicago, his hometown."

Balenciaga, Dior, Chanel and Schiaparelli all have some great hats (as do some actual milliners like Lily Dache) but I think I'll look for ugly dresses now.

Yeah, with the exception of the Living Room, I wish I had the nerve to wear any of these. (I wish I owned any of these.)

Most of the website info I kept was for nice stuff but I came across so many ugly things along the way that I should be able to find some.

ETA: Make that "with the exception of the Living Room and the Turkey Legs…"

Carefully avoiding things that are "would you wear this" simply because they are no longer stylish (e.g. a lot of clothes from the 20s & 30s) there is:
consgndonbrooksmultigwnsm.jpg

$845

consgnpeacockcoatsm.jpg

$1,750

sixtycrazysaksjumpsuitsm.jpg

$385 (and yes, it is a harem jumpsuit)

ysllooktentdressrufflywf.jpg

$645

The last one makes me think of a drawstring shopping bag a fancy boutique might give you to bring your dress home ine.
