Thanks for looking into this Magnus...

I built a 5v box mod yesterday and since I couldn't find my solder, I went to the RS a couple blocks from my home. They most certainly sell leaded solder.

they also carry silver... and the proper flux for it... its a blend of tin n silver... works like a charm....

and a good one - that's why it's best to stay sceptical and do your own homework unless you are lucky and have magnus do it for you ;)

True....gotta stay alert.

I'm not terribly worried about the levels of lead likely to make it's way from a bead of solder all the way up a wick and into some vapor. I'm far more afraid of the junk the physicians are nearly force feeding us these days.

But, I do very much appreciate the testing and research Magnus and friends are doing. It sends a powerful signal to our friends out there pioneering the e-cig industry. Kudos for taking the inititative on the matter and making a very important point that could indeed have a major impact on the future of E-cigs, and more importantly, the people who use them or count on their production/sale for a livelyhood.

There are likely thousands if not tens-of-thousands of statistically more likely ways to suffer permanent damage or death than vaping lead. I would be the first to say it's just unlikely this is a real risk issue. I think I did early on even when I found a few positive. However, there is no reason to be taking that risk here. There are areas where there is no readily available economic alternative to some other solution that might have a downside. (And by economic I don't just mean the $, I mean resources in general.)

In this particular case four things disturbed me about potential lead being used. The why do that? The what about those replacing and homebrewing with these things that come in physical contact more often? The fact they're used in tanks and potentially sitting and being dissolving for long periods of time. And the publicity that would be BAD for us as consumers if Congress had yet another reason to tell us how to live every last aspect of our already overly-controlled lives.

For me, on a personal level, .. I'm suffering a (hopefully) temporary disability brought on by mercury poisoning. And I had lead exposure issues earlier in life. And I have a 3yo daughter that needs me so the decision on risk is more emotional for me and probably unreasonable pragmatically speaking. -Magnus

The FDA has been trying to regulate these things as a drug for some time now. So far, they have failed.

Yeppers...
It's one of those darned if you do darned if you don't things. If they didn't at least make a good effort and problems arise on down the road, the people would be irate because the FDA didn't 'do enough'...we'd demand a house cleaning for their lack of 'action'. On the other hand...they're under attack for wanting to take a look at it and get some control.

The sad part about it all to me isn't so much that they wanted to take a look at e-cig safety and possibly even regulate parts of it...it's just how sloppy it's been handled world-wide....with misinformation, confusion, and poor communications over it all.

I don't know what's gotten into our journals and presses over the past 20 years.....but it's almost like they REFUSE to publish anything that makes sense. Sensation over substance......

By the time the people get wind of what's really going on...it's been so distorted that everyone involved just looks like big baffoons (and that's probably not really the case....more likely just good folks trying to play the middle and do their jobs).

Oh well...such is life...the good news is...at least for now...people can still enjoy e-Cigs in the USA for a fair price :)

Mangus....I want to personally thank you for all the testing you did on the CE-2's, and I would like to send you a pack as a personal Thank You, if you wish!

I do want to share some GREAT news with everyone about this 'possible' lead issue that will put everyone's mind at ease! I've been vaping exclusively on the CE-2's (Clearo's) since February of this year, and YES, my eyes lit up when I read the possibility of lead exposure!

To make a long story short, I'm already working with my biological dentist to set up a schedule for removing ALL my mercury fillings, and I wanted to spread it out over the next several months due to this being an out-of-pocket expense. So I had my ND do a full heavy metal panel on me last week, because if the mercury was high, there definitely would be a rush to get these fillings out ASAP! GREAT NEWS - mercury was NOT an issue....AND lead was NOT an issue either!!! Talk about the weight being lifted off my shoulders this afternoon when my ND shared this wonderful news with me!

So I hope this puts everyone's mind at ease...between my test results and Mangus' test results...we can all get back to doing what we enjoy so much......:vapor: :vapor: :vapor: :vapor:

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I'm tentatively dipping my toe (wick?) back into vaping after being diagnosed with what's called a demyelinating disease/condition, Transverse Myelitis. (Essentially, something caused my immune system to attack the protective coating on my spinal cord, leaving a lesion of nerve damage in its wake - all of the usual suspects such as MS were ruled out by my neurologist, who just diagnosed it as "idiopathic" or basically, unknown cause.) At first, I was concerned it was liquid-related (there's one diketone flavoring that's been shown to produce neurological damage - it's called hexanedione) but I'd started recently to think that it might've been related to the attys I was using (which were "copper" colored on top of whatever they were made out of/soldered with). I was thinking it could be lead-related, but instead stumbled across something else that led me to really start considering some sort of other metal poisoning - like silver or zinc - as apparently many metals can cause demyelination.

I'd started to tentatively replace my analogs with ecopure in a CE2 XL clearomizer, thinking maybe it was "safe" (for me only, I'm NOT making any statement or FUD comment about the safety in general) to go back to vaping if I ditched both the flavored liquid I'd been using plus ditched my usual attys in favor of my clearo's. But... I'd also just started using the clearo's when this lesion occurred.

What do y'all think? (And yes, that sound you hear is my head repeatedly beating against the keyboard as I try to figure out if vaping is viable for me.)

You know, to absolutely minimize the risk from attys maybe consider the new G4 cartomizer (try Liberty Flights) or the upcoming CE3 (available mid-July from GotVapes). They are solder free, have far less metal to leach (if anything leaches), etc. The G4 has been hit-or-miss in terms of overall reliability but the CE3s look very promising from all aspects.

On top of that you can buy unflavored VG or PG base as well and work upward from there.

Good luck! -Magnus

are you sure its lead?
solder is tin mostly. idk if they used lead free solder or not but you can test.

Did you read the thread? A few of us did a lot of testing to make sure it wasn't lead....... this latest set of responses is for shanagan's latest set of concerns (which isn't lead only). -Magnus
