Leaky atomizer? Gunk on battery plate?

Hey, I'm relatively new to vaping, I've vaped in the past but never have I owned my own gear until now. After having slight issues with my battery that was easily resolved with some gentle prying of the pin/plate on the battery I have noticed after a few hours of use I get a thin layer of rust coloured gunk on my battery plate. I presume this is just a leaky atomizer? The gunk wipes off easily enough and isn't a big problem, I just don't want to cause any damage to my battery despite looking to upgrade in the future. I'm currently using a HS VapourMX but I'm looking to upgrade almost everything in the near future (within a month or so, probably before Christmas). Any idea what is going wrong? It never seemed to do this until I moved the battery plate but it could also be due to the new atomizer I bought yesterday. Any ideas?

What I think it might be is that I'm flooding the atomizer. I recently replaced my original one that I got with the HS Vapour MX and the one I purchased as a replacement was relatively stubby. I think when I fill it it's escaping the tank and going into the atomizer. Perhaps not. Any ideas?

I think I might have figured it out, maybe just a novice mistake. When I purchased the new atomizer and screwed it in I don't think I secured it tight enough. This might have allowed it to leak into the battery area and might explain any other problems. I'll keep an eye on my battery and see if the problem is solved.
