Hello once again guys.

I came across this letter written by Ken Cheung, MD regarding a tobacco ban while doing the news segment of my show earlier this evening. I felt I had to share because it hits close to home and it rather disgusted me to be truly honest.

Letter - Letter: Ban cigarettes

The following excerpt is from said article;
"They are putting a lot of effort into making the warning labels on cigarette packages even more scary and graphic. Why doesn't the government exercise its ultimate power and ban the sale of cigarettes altogether? This would solve the problem."

How someone could be so obtuse is a mystery to say the least... And to be an MD to boot?! I do know the health risks (I think we all do) but banning them is not the answer.

But hey, I am not a doctor, lets hear what Ken has to say shall we?

"The message is that they don't really want us to smoke because smoking is bad for us, hence the warning labels, yet they will allow the sale of this killer product. Let me use an analogy to show the absurdity of how this is being handled. A car seat is proven to be dangerous and could kill one in 1,000 babies placed in it. Would the government allow the sale of this car seat as long as there is a big warning label slapped on it? Of course not. They would pull this product from the market and ban its sale. "

Now call me a fool, but imho there is some huge differences between a plastic car seat and addictive psycho-actives. He speaks of absurdity? When you ban an unsafely manufactured car seat, there is no one so addicted to the product that they will find it in any way possible... You won't see a 20 year "car seat" addict in any dank, dark alley forking out hundreds so he can get his fix any time soon... Now that is utter absurdity. Also, that would be one car seat design banned from one company... Not a ban on car seats overall.

If you want to see how well prohibition works then open up your history books or simply take a look at the current situation with illegal drugs of any kind. Banning cigarettes would push them into the hands of criminals, de-regulate a highly regulated market and also inflate the prices much higher than they are now... And we will imprison good people to boot.

Anyway it's not like this is Harper saying this or anything but I am seeing more and more of this kind of rhetoric with each passing day on both Canadian and American soil.

Hope this was interesting and take care guys.

I wouldn't let it get to you. It will never happer, especially in Canada where tobacco taxes make up so much of our health care system. And as for the states, the tobacco industry is so big that I wouldn't be surprised if the government holds them as close as the auto industry. Wouldn't that be a laugh? Big tobacco goes bankrupt and the government bails them out :p
