So what's the easiest/cheapest way to get this merchant account setup on my OSCommerce web site? Are there any automated programs available for OSC? "Self install" programs?
Help please. PP hasn't got me yet, but I'm sure that's only a matter of time.
Besides, if they are booting everyone, I want to boot them!

Shoot an PM to Ryle, she is helping vendors hook up with a merchant processor who is e-cig friendly(and apparently very reasonable). If you would rather go the self-install route, she may be able to suggest something for you as well. Your the Copper guy, your product looks pretty sweet. Good Luck.

Also, I found this maybe this will help(Still contact Ryle)

I'm not a big fan of OSCommerce my self, preferring ZenCart. Zen was originally based on OSC but has evolved on it's own. I'd imaging though that OSC should have processing through Authorize.net built in, or at least available as a add-on. It's not difficult to set up (at least not on zen). Find out what processing gateway options are available for your cart and search for a processor that uses one of those options.

Most merchant accounts use Authorize.net or Quantum Gateway for their internet processing gateway. You can't get set up directly through Authorize.net. They are only a gateway. You have to go through a third party reseller. I took a look at the site that Ryle is sending people to and they don't provide much of anything for information on their site. The site doesn't mention their fees, who they use for a processing gateway or anything.

The site that I have used in all of my e-commerce stores as well as for retail sales is Truth in Processing. They are very open about the fees they charge, set up fees, etc and have a BBB Rating of A, the second highest rating available. I have used them for years and haven't had any problems with them yet. Discover however has been a different issue and I won't use them, but that's a different topic.

CDGcommerce is one of the highest rated processors out there with a BBB excellent "A+" rating and is BBB accredited. That is almost unheard of in the credit processing industry. They use Authorize.net for their internet gateway, so should be compatible with most online shopping carts. If I were looking for a credit card processing company today, this is the one that I'd most likely go with.

Check sites like BBB RipOffReport.com, Complaints.com, ComplaintsBoard.com, Trustlink and others to verify the reputation of the company BEFORE signing up. Also google their name and you'll usually find useful information about almost any company.

Google "merchant account" and you'll find there are literally thousands of processors out there. A great many of them are total rip-offs. Others are less than desirable. Do your research and find one that you actually trust with YOUR MONEY and business. Don't go blindly for the lowest rate. That can often be negotiated. A low rate isn't going to do you any good if you can't get customer service to go with it. If you really want a paypal replacement instead of a full merchant account, then try googling "paypal replacement", or "paypal alternative"

Make sure you understand all fees and charges associated with your account. The internet processing gateway, Mastercard, Vesa and others all have their fees. This sounds like it's going to get expensive, but it's really not. You've already been paying those expenses with the high processing fees with paypal anyhow. You just didn't know it. With a true merchant account, you will be much more aware of where your money is going than ever before.

Once your signed up watch your account closely. Some of the less reputable companies sign you up with a low rate, then raise it on you without notice or explanation or add additional charges and fees. Good research can help avoid that to begin with.

I could write a book on the subject, but hopefully, I've covered the basics enough that all of you can get your selves set up with a good company. What ever you do, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! It takes a little effort, but you'll find a processor that is good and will treat you right. There are a lot of good ones out there to choose from.

I found a very good article that explains all of the assorted rates fees etc associated with a merchant account. It explains the fees charged by each credit card, the processor etc. and it's a very informative and good read. It's written by a guy at GDCcommerce but does not in any way promote the company other than crediting it's source. It's just a good collection of information for those who have never has a merchant account before, and even those that do. You can find it here.

This is also a good article on credit card security and fraud protection. With a real merchant account you can get protection levels far beyond anything that paypal ever thought of. That is one of many reasons I have never accepted paypal on any of my sites.

A good list of questions that everyone should ask their processor about rates and fees before signing up.

A good article about setting up CC processing on your website and it's associated fees.

Each of these articles are provided by CDGCommerce, but do not promote the company. They are honest and open information that provide the kind of information that should be used in your search for a processor.

I am in no way associated with this company. I found them quite by accident while searching for other things and they have impressed me. I provide this information only in an effort to help others screwed by paypal.

Notice I never capitalize paypals name. I don't think they deserve the respect.

You can add The Widow to the list. Paypal just zapped me.
Unfortunately I had only just started looking into an alternative so I am totally not ready for this.
The big problem is that I will have to start over with a new website since the one I use now is limited to Paypal only.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

You might not need a whole new website, sometimes it's a matter of small code changes to switch payment methods. If you need any help shoot me a PM and I'll see if it can be changed easily or not.

I wish it were that easy. The website only supports the paypal cart, so I'm SOL aka Up the Creek Without a Paddle. I'm starting from scratch.

Just an Idea for you Widow. As soon as you can decide on the merchant account you will use. You can do phone orders using the "virtual Terminal" that most merchant account vendors offer. You can get a cheap 800 phone number through Vonage. This way you will be able to do business while your web site is being written. I used this method on my web sites for customers who didn't want to do online credit card processing.

I just placed a large juice order from a site that is still up and running with Paypal checkout. It's almost funny that Paypal checkout almost insisted that I use my Paypal account instead of my credit card. I guess it won't be long before all the vendors are cut off but for now there are still some out there using Paypal.
