Lithium Ion + magnets

I am in the process of making my first box mod and have a question about batteries and magnets. Would it be a bad idea to use the battery as a magnetic contact? I am using some small magnets to hold my cover on and wanted to use the battery as the metallic contact, the magnets would contact the side of the batteries and not the conductive ends.

Magnets won't affect the batteries in any way. However, if I'm understanding your idea to have the magnets contact the sides of the battery instead of the contacts, that won't work.

Why? Any type of magnet will hold securely through the covering of a 14500 or 18650. A single 6 x 1.5 mm Neodymium will easily lift a 18650.

Thanks for the responses, it seems to be working okay, I just want to make sure I am not damaging or shorting the life of the batteries.

I can't see how that would bother a battery, I've attached the above mentioned magnets to the negative end of batteries as a spacer in mechanically switched mods. These year old trustfires are still kicking.

Oh, I thought he wanted to use the magnets instead of regular battery contacts (which would work), but have them contact the sides of the battery instead of the ends (which wouldn't).

Why not just put another magnet or piece of metal on the inside of your box? If it's on the battery and you drop it and the battery comes out so goes the lid. The other way it will hold your lid on and batteries in.

I am using pretty strong springs to hold the battery in place and have not really had a problem with the battery coming out when I remove the lid. But to answer your question, space. I want to keep it small as possible.

No it's not.

Some of these high powered neodymium magnets can mess up mag strips on credit card, driver's licenses, and may even be dangerous.
Make sure you think out your application.

They're cheap and easy to get, easy to lose. Order 100, or a 1000. Do you know where they are now? How many did you lose?
Just like e-juice, if a pet or kid gets a hold of these little magnets they can cause all kinds of problems.
Ingest two, at different times and they can kill.
