Hello! Fellow ECF members old and new! Its been a while and the site is totally different from what I remember. I feel like this should be posted in the new member section but for some reason I couldnt make a new thread there. So I'm saying my hellos here.

I remember long ago when we gathered here the tossed around ideas of improving cart capacities, wicking methods/materials, getting that perfect throat hit, dripping, flashlight casing for mods w/ radioshack switches, discussing tank, variable volt batts and rebuildable atomizers design. And HOLY VAPES! All of that is here and more! I left after I found the ecig I was happy with and stuck with it all these years(since 2009). I still have my Lava eCig, Joye 510, SideShow from MV. Right now I'm still using my reliable V4L KR808D1 eCig.

Finally time to move on and :confused:! I'm going "variable-what?!", "rda/rba, huh?!", "macro, micro, nano ini-mini-mini-wth?!", "sub-ohMG???". So its time to go back to the 'roots' and learn all the new stuff-- and i'm years behind :facepalm:. So I just placed and order for the "iStick" and a simple(aka cheap) rebuildable atomizer and 28ga wire for a newbie budget of $50 for everything. just to get my feet wet so to speak. So while I'm waiting for it to arrive, I have to read and learn about ohm coiling.

Glad to be back! :D

Hello and welcome back to to the forum Archer. Glad to have you here!:)

I too have been vaping a long time -- 8 years. Here are some reference materials for you (take what you want, skip over the rest). For an education on mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (our resident battery expert) and visit his blogs. Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

11. Deeper Understanding of Mod Batteries Part 1
* For those who want to learn the differences between IMR, IMR/hybrid, and ICR batteries. What do those numbers and letters on batteries mean? What's an amp rating?

12. Deeper Understanding of Mod Batteries Part 2
* Protected vs unprotected batteries - what's the difference? Ohm's Law 101. What is an AW battery? What is an inline fuse? What is stacking batteries?

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

How to Spot Fake Sony Batteries
Sony Real vs Fake.jpg

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Welcome, I have slightly different version of your story I tried e-cigs in 2008-2009 and gave up. Quit cold-turkey in 2009. I was off smoking for around three years and went back to analogs, because of the horrible experience of vaping. I came back last month, and accidentally created a duplicate account. Now my account is all straightened out. Anyway the biggest players are Provape with provari, Evolv with DNAxx boards, and REO for niche product (bottom feeder). Mechanical mods (straight battery tubes) are the rage, with RDA's and sub-ohming. Old-timers generally don't see the need for sub-ohming lower than 0.5 ohms. The most prevalent RTA is the Kayfun lite (clones), but there are some others that are gaining ground as they are easier on maintenance. Japanese cotton (KGD), or rayon are the domminent wick materials. Kanthal is the dominate resistance wire. DIY juice is another big thing for saving money. Rebuildables, DIY, and reliable mods have costs below $10 a month, after start-up, if you want to save money. Good luck on updating your kit.

P.S. Evolv just came out with a DNA40 board. This will allow for temperature control, and may be a major shift in all but mechanical mods. Before you spend big money you owe it to yourself to check it out.

I'm a Reo fan (especially the Woodvils) but am also extremely interested in the new DNA40. Just saw PBusardo's video and can't wait to see what happens here. Evolv's DNA 40 Temperature Protection Board

I'm one of those folks who tried vaping back in 2009 when we were using teabags and flashlights, and ended up failing then, but came back a year ago...today is my one year off the stinkies date!! A bunch of us from the early days have done this, and the equipment now is staggering!! Try a little bit of various things as budget allows...it's a whole new world!

Yay! Welcome back.. I've followed a similar path. Coming and going every so often. Glad you found your way back. :) Can you believe it, they took our mechanical stuff, where we were messing around with upping the voltage with those chips to make them hit harder and they found a few ways to do it without bugging TI for a sampler chip. Sub ohms, variable wattage, it's all so...awesome! :D

    Hi Archer, welcome back.

    You have't needed all this fancy stuff for years, so you really don't need it now. A bit more modern would probably be a good thing tho'.

    I don't have an istick, so I can't say much about it except:

    Basically the RDAs simply replace the dripping atties of old, and you can set them up any way you want. I would suggest some 30g or 32g wire tho'. It will take a lot of wraps to get 28g to vape close to what you are use to.
