Long-time vaping but running into new problems

First of all, hello from South Louisiana. I'm an IT professional working in the healthcare industry. I'm 35 years old and spend a lot of my freetime gaming. I have vaped since 2012 using pretty much every kind of device one can imagine. Currently I am using a smok AL85 with the Baby Q2 and 0.4 oHm coils. I'm burning my coils out in less than 5 days. Sometimes extravagantly.

The coil says that the best wattage is between 55 and 65 watts. I usually do either 55 or 65 and I personally deem it "low" and "high" respectively. However, the coil is rated to handle anything from 40W to 80W. So I feel like being between 55W and 65W is a pretty good normal range for an adequate amount of vapor, and taste. But the coils just don't last.

So I was thinking this had something to do with the liquid I'm using. I always used to vape Smokcignals Supermint. It's a company out of Hammond, Louisiana and I've never had any problems using my old mod, which was a Kangertech. I since "upgraded" to the smok and find this to be a lot more powerful, and I enjoy the freer flow of air that I get.

I can't take the overbearing flavor of Supermint in this new mod so I switched my liquid to a company out of Los Angeles called Humble. It's available at my local vapor supplier. It's cheap. Something like $26 for 120ml at 3mg. This is the liquid I am having the most trouble with. I bought some Boosted and it ran fine for about 25% longer than the Humble. But it's $60 for 120ml and the price point is just insane for me. I vape a lot so I burn through 120ml bottle in about a week's time. Lots of online gaming and hitting a vape on load screens will do that to me. Not to mention, I'm allowed to vape in my office at work so that is a nervous habit for me.

My question here is what could I be doing wrong? Is this mod/tank combo (it's the starter kit) be causing a problem? I know boosted was 60/40 and I think Humble is 80/20. I'm not sure if that's making a different or not in how long the coil lasts. But I used to be able to get two weeks out of a coil at the bare minimum. Now I'm lucky if I can pull longer than 3 seconds on a coil, 5 days after I install it.

Again, hello to everyone here and I deeply appreciate any insight someone can give me. Or suggestions on mods that would work better.

Thanks!

I would think the "mod" has nothing to do with it; it is simply supplying power to the tank. Your issue is either the "tank" or more specifically the "coils" used.

It used to be that the quality control of coil manufacturing back in the day was iffy at best. I had some coils be duds right out of the box. I can only speak to the quality of the coils in the tanks that I use currently, and I find they last up to 4 weeks or more. FYI, I use the 0.5 ohm coils for the original Uwell Crown tank, vaping 30 - 40 watts.

One issue to consider is the juice that you vape. Liquids that have a lot of sweetner in them tend to clog the coils and make your vape taste bad and shorten their life expectancy. Juice that is higher in Vg or all Vg is much thicker and may cause some coils to have issues in keeping up with a chain vaper when wicking is an issue.

Hi and welcome. I, too, would be more inclined to blame the liquid than the machine. Sweet and/or dark juices are coil breakers. The Smok tank you're using seems to be afflicted with short-life coils also; although that's something I read rather than know as I don't have one. You might try learning to coil your own tanks. That's the best solution I know. It's easy and cheap to pull a new wick, and the actual coil part can last a year or more. Failing that, maybe switch tanks to one with better coils, although I build exclusively and haven't one handy to recommend to you. Finally, if you'll crank the watts back, you may find the coils last longer. Crank it back enough, you might even find your old spearmint juice isn't too overpowering.

I was into tanks with drop in coils for a long time and had no interest in rtas or rdas. But then I tried an rta, my coiling sucked at first....but I found out that making and installing coils in a tank turned out to be really relaxing, play some music on the computer and just dink around with coiling, found it was a really enjoyable hour or so. You kind of get lost in it, and it was alot more interesting to me than screw in coil tanks. And that led slowly to rdas, which led slowly to rdtas....and on and on. I did find that making coils got a whole lot easier using a coilmaster jig. But I still coil the old fashioned hand method sometimes also. And recently I did try out a couple of newer tanks (Cleito and the Cleito 120) and was surprised to find I was really disappointed in them both, the flavor to me was lacking and the vape quality was not up to par for some reason, it felt, well bland somehow....plenty of cloud, yes, but it wasn't the same rich type of vape. Honestly, do yourself a favor and try out a good RDTA tank, even if you install pre-made coils you'll be really happy with the increased flavor (The Council of Vapor RHXT is an excellent rdta)

Welcome and glad you joined.
I would look in to rebuildable coils. Your preferred way to vape is very wick consuming. If you can bend a paper clip, you can make a coil.

I'm going to agree with those saying it is your juice. I save my darker, sweeter juices for my RTAs, as it's much easier (and cheaper) to rewick. It sounds like your juice is a coil clogger and there isn't much to be done about coil life with that juice. If 50/50 was working better, it's because the juice is thinner (less gunking factors) and if it's a clear juice and a not so sweet juice, yes, you will be getting better coil life out of your coils.

Good luck,

Anna

It's the juice, and quantity thereof, that's killing your coils. Time elapsed since coil installation is irrelevant. A coil head like the Baby Beast can be killed in a few hours if it's vaporizing enough sweet, dark, high VG juice. If you just have to have the juice that's killing the coil head, be prepared to swap coils often.

There are tanks that are less thirsty and don't require as much power as Smok's Taste Furious line. Kanger Sub and Top tanks are an option. The Vaporesso Estoc Mega is another.

There's also the option of trying a rebuildable, if you don't mind spending the time to recoil and rewick your atomizer.
