A few comments to share from your first experience, Punkonjunk:
vaping is different from smoking. Many first time vapors have some issues with vapor often resulting in coughing. It took your body time to adjust to smoke, it will take your body time to adjust to vapor.
How much e-liquid did you put in your cartomizers and clearomizers? It sounds like they were not filled properly or with enough liquid. Sad to say, once a cartomizer tastes "burnt", it likely is and is ruined. The filler that is in them CAN burn and nothing can get rid of that taste once burnt.
What ohm are your clearomizers and cartomizers? LR (low resistance) delivery devices can taste burnt to some people, as they end up preferring a "cooler vape". Standard resistance (2.0 - 2.5 ohm) or even high resistance (2.5 - 3.0 ohm) may be more to your liking.
Did you only get the one flavor of juice? I've found fruit flavors to taste best at a lower voltage (3.4 - 3.7 volts). It could be you just don't care for that flavor of juice.
I might have more things as I think of them....
