Menthol drops work great to add a bit of harshness and is easy to make with Pure Grain Alcohol (purchased at a liquor store or grocery store and usually found under the name EverClear). A good recipe that I've used can be found on this thread
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/diy-e-liquid/20590-menthol-drops-recipe-menthol-lovers.html

Menthol crystals can be purchased on eBay. Again, experiment in small batches.

If you know you just won't like menthol, you can try to add throat hit with anything acidic. Try a bit of Pure Grain Alcohol (EverClear), good high proof Vodka, Rose's bottled Lemon Juice, vinegar or citric acid. Experiment first with very small batches of liquid so you don't waste much liquid (try with zero nicotine first to save it)!

Malic acid can be found at beer/wine making shops and some of the perfume and aromatherapy stores on line. This is the smallest amount I've been able to find here in the States so far (you'll have to ask them about international shipping Jofre or search for something in your area. Just make sure it is Food Grade!):
Malic Acid 2oz - WineGuySupply.com
2 oz for $1.99

Seems it is added to tobacco flavors? Please update (and PM me?) if you use this as I'd be interested in the result.

Here's something that I found awhile ago - posted by 'Crand'....

Using an empty 30 mil bottle I'll fill it half way with vodka ant the other half with tabasco. I'll then run it through a coffee filter into another 30 mil bottle. The end result is a golden liquid that will make up about 15 to 20% to volume of my homemade liquids. I vape strictly 0 nic and this gives me a nice throat hit.

I made it up once and it was intresting to say the least... :) More of a 'warm burn' than a throat hit - but it was enjoyable....

Your best bet would be to go with higher voltage mods, and I'd tell you to drip without a cart but I think you already do. Hotter vapor => harsher TH.

Jofre pretty much wrote the book on using FA Pepper for TH. If you can get ahold of Piperine that would be the purest way to go about getting the peppery bite.

Malic acid is tarter than citric acid, but I think it would add sourness more than harshness. However, I've only heard about results with citric acid.

I'd recommend using DV's Diablo Loco available at Totally Wicked. Or if you can find capsaicin / manually extract it since that's what is in the Diablo Loco, that would work too. Tabasco is really weak and people who are used to spicy food will probably not get TH out of that concoction.

Tobacco Absolute adds a peppery harshness. I'm not very hopeful about citric acid. Can you tolerate its sourness? Wanna vape a lemon?

Just a thought; I wonder if throat hit and harshness are things we should walk away from. After years, maybe decades of smoking analogs, are we asking for trouble by further irritating our throats and lungs? Does vaping have to be a more pleasurable experience in every way?

That is exactly what vaping should be, but everybody has different level of "pleasurable" experience.

Thanks for replies again guys, really appreciate that.

ps: anyway... i feel so much better and more comfortable without smoking. It is 5 months now!

Or perchaps Diablo Loco from Decadent Vapours? :)
(Totally Wicked's website for that)

Diablo Loco said:
Pain in a bottle! This is an insanely hot (the concentrate measures approx. 500,000 SHU on the Scoville Heat Scale - that's 1-200x hotter than tabasco sauce!) juice condiment, made using Naga jolokia chillis - officially the hottest in the world - and designed for spicing up other juices. If a single drop is too hot for you, dilute it to 1-10% with PG, VG or PEG-400 to make a stock solution, and use that. Unless you're the kind of person who thinks a good night out isn't complete without being "maced" with police pepper spray at some point in the evening, you really do not want to even contemplate mixing this up the same strength as a normal flavoured juice - you have been warned! :)

Oh crum... I forgot. Some people are adding FlavourArts Black Pepper for a more harsh throat hit. FreedomSmokeUSA carries it (FreedomSmokeUSA they're here in Arizona).

Harsh TH? Really? I don't get that. Maybe I'm not using enough. Actually, I do start to get a bit of a mesquite barbecue-esque note when my cart is nearing empty, and then it does plenty TH. But not when the atty is properly wetted.

Anyways, there's this thread about using chili pepper, with a link to Walrus getting some TH from cayenne extract.

I haven't tried it yet. It was recommended on the forum but when I went to order (FreedomSmokeUSA.com) they didn't have it in at that time, but I guess they do now. Let us know how it is if you up the concentration Whistle.

Walrus! Awww, I miss him. I'm not trying that!

I like menthol and that seems to do it for me when I need a throat punch. Maybe I'll just stick there. The Koolada from PA seems to be a menthol chemical (menthyl methyl lactate) that has less of a cooling effect and bitterness which might not change a flavor base quite as much as using menthol. Could be interesting to try!

I added another 2 drops. Funny thing -- the fade into mesquite effect went away. So it's a different flavor in that blend that was doing that. Too many flavors to guess which one.

I have some weak juice that I can experiment with. But all my attys are full of strong flavors, so it'll take some work. I can tell you that the Black Pepper FA I have smells just like the extract I made. But I think that in vaping, the flavor is more subtle, and easily overwhelmed with other flavors if they're strong -- like Perique, Latakia, Shade, and Dark Vapure. Also, in the blend where I tried increasing the dosage, I have a touch of Vape Wizard, which does mellow things out.

I wonder if this is the same stuff as the FlavourArt Magic Mask!

calcium carbonate

Calcium Carbonate 2oz
* Item #: 1069

2oz Calcium Carbonate, Acid gives wine its awesome flavors and crispness. Sometime wine has too much acidity and needs to be lowered. To lower acidity use 5/8 teaspoon per gallon. Use before fermentation. Do not reduce acid more than .30%.
