Looking for some buying advice...

Hey,

I am looking to buy some form of e-cigarette for my dad who has been smoking for 45+ years. At this point i am not really trying to help him quit, I'd just like to have him be able to get back inside the house(mom won't let him smoke inside the house, so he lives in "his house" --the garage).

I have looked around a bit on this forum and the wiki page re: e-cigarettes but i don't think i have enough knowledge of/experience with smoking to be able to make an proper decision as to which product to purchase.

I think something that looks and feels most like a cigarette would be the best and the most bland tobacco flavor(he smokes Basic..) would be just fine.

What is the best? What simulates a real cigarette the best? Thanks a lot.

Is he around 60 years old or more? He might not want to **** around with the maintenance and replacement aspects. Have you mentioned it to him first?

PS...I mean no offense to anyone older but if he didn't look into it and express the desire first, well, he might not be prepared for "the work" involved.

Valid concern, but being an electrical engineer he is the kinda guy that loves weird gadgets simply because they are gadgets.

I don't really intend for this to be a replacement for his cigarettes, but an alternative to having to go into the garage every hour for a cigarette, or having to stand outside a restaurant in the freezing cold.

I don't think he knows such a thing exists, but if i can get him interested in the idea by trying it out to see that it actually works, he will spend a good three solid weeks of his retirement learning everything there is to know about the things...which is what i want.

Hi Joe, welcome to the forum.

It's a nice idea to get your dad an ecig. Just a word of warning, not everyone likes them, they take a bit of getting used to and looking after.

Have a look for tips on this thread - http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...503-non-smoker-wants-convert-his-friends.html

I'd suggest to start off with a DSE901 mini kit with a spare atomiser and bottle of eliquid. Smaller ecigs are generally unsatisfactory. Esmoking does not taste like smoking, there is no comparable flavour so you'll just have to guess a flavour to suit your dad. Janty/Litecig RY4 or riskee yuice is a good one.

For a supplier have a look here - http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/e-cigarette-suppliers-forum/531-general-list-suppliers.html

Tell us where in the world you are and we might be able to be more specific about good suppliers.

Not really in a position to make a recommendation yet, only a month into this with a DSE901b. It works for me, made a pack of 20 tobaccos last five days this week. I was 1 1/2 packs a day before. :D Lot of people here do seem to reckon they're a good starter though.

If he's Net savvy and gets into it (and can afford it!) he might well track down something that is just the thing for him after he's done some learning with a first one.

As you say he's an electrical engineer who loves gadgets - perhaps you can set him to work on designing us new improved models. By definition we're all open to new ideas and some of the members here are forever tinkering around with them. Search 'mods' (modifications) to see what I mean. Introduce him to the forum and he can become a member too if he gets into it.

Kate's right though, location (and budget) will affect where (and what) to buy. You can let us all see where you are if you edit your profile to put in your country/state or whatever. Oh yes - and, welcome! Seconded.

the best cigarette-looking device would be the super mini,
but the battery and cart doesn't last long.

the better choice would be a penstyle with it's longer lasting batt and cart, but it is 15cm long....

something in between is the 901.

another thing you should know is,
that the cartridges and liquid don't really taste like normal cigarettes,
not even the ones labeled as such.

so i think you should get him a sample pack of liquid as well,
so he can find "his" flavor.

johnson creek would be something to consider.

as for nicotine strenght,
check his cigarette box. if it's about 1mg nic, i guess "high" is ok.

I don't have the exp of the others here, but I am a long term HEAVY smoker, who has tried to quit, but not really wanted to (even now). As in 20 years and, if I smoked regulars I would be on about 60-100 a day! (I roll my own)80% of which is habitual rather than all out addict.

Now I got started on these things as an alternative, 1: to cut my real cigarettes down, saving me money, 2: So I can smoke in the house with no concience.

And I have to say, in less than a week, I have cut my cigs down by 2/3rds and (most importantly) I am not feeling denyed or withdrawn, and this is a major 1st.

The others are right in the taste department, but for me, I am already finding the ritual side of things (which is a major part of smoking for a lot of folks) is, although not the same, involved enough to make it part of the experience. And I expect this to help in the long run, playing with flavours (not DIY, but a bit of mix and match to get closer to the flavours I want), topping the cartridges, cleaning etc., has similar overtones to pipesmoking. Which was another favourite of mine

Also, I have an e-cigar, and the novelty of being able to smoke a cigar in the house all day long is a big one. As although I do not have any smoking restrictions in my home, other than the bedroom, I would not inflict cigars and pipes on my wife, cats and dog.

For me the e-cigar provides loads of smoke-like vapour, which I feel is a major playor in me not feeling denied - last night I was home alone, watched a couple of movies with a pint, and only smoked 2 cigarettes, (did a whole e-cigar cartridge and a battery though) - now I ain't kidding when I tell you, normally I would have filled the ashtray (and it ain't that small).

It depends on your dads attitude, but if he sees it as a way to fill in the gaps, and maybe not go outside quite so often, but knows he can still go out there and have those all important puntuation marks with 'the real thing' it is a good way to do it. i.e. don't look at it as a quiting device, more as an alternative way of smoking that you CAN do, in a world where everyone is increasingly telling us we can't.

I wish these had been around 10 years ago! I had a good freind who was about 60 and forced to quit, by docs, family, and so called freinds with good intentions, but smoking had been a huge part of his life, and I am sure it was a major player in him giving up on life instead. If he'd had something like this, I reckon he would still be alive today.
