Loves to leak

My kayfun lite loves to leak from the air hole and where the base meets the tank (pink arrow in picture).

I think I am doing the right things, so not sure why. I wanted to run this by you, to see if someone can point out what I am missing, assuming the issue has to do with either my wick or the top filling method. I have verified that all o-rings are in place and everything is secured/screwed properly.

Wick

I am using organic cotton. From most of the videos I have seen, it seems the proper amount of wick is when the cotton is trimmed down to the almost to edge of the chimney and then tucked (not too tightly) over the juice channels at the bottom of the deck. When the leak started (from day one), I thought may be I am not using enough cotton, so I tucked a bit more cotton on top of the existing wick and that seemed to help for a little bit, but not consistently. Do I need to use more/longer/thicker wick?

Top Filling

Here is what I do,

  1. Take the device off the battery
  2. Unscrew the top
  3. Put a finger over the air hole
  4. Fill it. I never fill too much above the chimney and definitely not above the little chimney cap. Finger is still on the air hole.
  5. Put the top back on, just enough to catch the threads of the tank
  6. Turn the whole thing over upside down and screw the cap quickly. Quickly because, at this point I always get some juice run into my hands. Is this bad?
  7. Wait for some of the juice to flow to the top of the upside down device
  8. Turn the device back
  9. Take finger off of the air hole

OK. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Every time I've had leaking with my kayfun it has been due to not enough cotton. When I rewick, I don't fill from the top. I fill from the bottom fill hole while covering the air hole with my finger. Getting the right wick amount can take some time to get just right. It is a delicate balance.

Top filling can result in juice getting into the air hole. In fact, no mater what steps I follow, I've never had a lot of luck too filling Kayfun Lites. For some reason, I can only do it with the 3.1. The Lites are easier to fill through the port then the 3.1 though, so I too full 3.1 and use the ports for the lite.

So far I have not been too impressed with mine. When I rebuild and fill up it does great but once I re-fill........leaks begin to happen. Good luck to you and I hope we both learn something from this question. Thanks for posting it. :)

I've never had a successful top fill of my KFLs- always get the leaking from air hole you describe. No leaks with bottom fill, except when I take them outside in very warm weather- then they flood and weep from the air hole.

If your KFL is leaking at the bottom seam I suspect you've got a bad seal- check your O-rings.

If it's leaking between the base and the bottom of the tank, replace the o-ring. I have the opposite problem on the two KFL+ clones I own. Anytime I bottom fill I have leaking issues and now I only top fill those two. The only thing I do differently is put my finger over the mouth piece hole just before I turn it over and then release my finger from the air hole when it's inverted while securing the last few threads on the tank. I've done this several times and the problem when away. However, I bought 6 authentic KFs which do not leak when bottom filled before I found this solution.

Leaking issues are what turned me away from buying clones anymore. Some are better than others but you never know. It's just not worth it for me, I have enough problems getting them wicked correctly.

From what I am hearing in general, the leaking isn't exclusive to clones, even genuine kayfuns are prone to this, if everything isn't done right. Though I might be wrong. I am trying to find out exactly what the "right" is :).

This is the best tutorial for Kayfun builds that I know of. I use the VH (vertical hollow) coils on all my Kayfuns and Rip does a great one in this video. Leaking like you have described is caused by flooding, when you get your build down the leaks will just disappear.

Don't really want to get into a clone wars discussion. Folks should buy whatever works the best for them. However, people that buy a clone for $20 of a $150 device and expect the same quality still confuses to me.

This statement turns on the assumption that money equals quality.

Im not sure I buy that.

As I mentioned earlier, this isn't real vs clone thing..the point is.. people with "real" devices are having leaks too (and some folks with clones have zero issues). Hence my assumption that these devices, real or clone need a proper set up and there might be something wrong with the way I am doing this. So I am not ready to blame the clone yet.

So, what does someone buying a $13 copy and Getting the Same Vape quality do for you?:D
Seriously, I get your point but the fact is people often have no clue what they are buying for the price. That is where getting garbage comes in, not in the Price.

Any Kayfun style device, original or Clone/copy can leak from the air hole. Especially if you do not fill properly.(refilling is worse)

Finger over the air hole is a bit of a myth. Even if you have the lower hole covered, the Chimney cap is still open to allow equalization.:)

Filling Properly from the BASE places the wick channels as high as possible - away from the liquid. Leaving the proper air bubble Keeps the channels out of the fluid.
Secure the fill screw then FLIP to upright(not a slow roll over) This places equal pressure on both channels at once.

Refilling usually allows fast rewicking until everything is sealed well again. Excess liquid will drop down the center air channel Condensation has also followed this path(more wet)
A dribble is NOT a sigh of a leak. it is just excess Below the wick, in the air channel

An easy clear is to Fire the Mod and blow through the side air hole - Makes an awesome cloud and clears the excess out.:2cool:

Don't top fill if it keeps leaking on you. I used to always top fill but couldn't get it to not leak. I always bottom fill now and actually don't find it that much of a hassle, if you have the bottle positioned right, you might not have to use a syringe, just squeeze it directly into the tank. Works for me and I've even been able to do it with a glass dropper.
