The Computer Security forum was deactivated some time ago during one of the site updates and I didn't see a need to bring it back until now. There's a new threat floating around out there and as a lot of our members look for the best (read, cheapest) deals on the Internet, this could apply to you.
The problem here isn't so much that the devices were compromised after they were installed at the user's home, these devices came infected from the suppliers. Yes... The devices were already infected when purchased. Now this doesn't apply to phones. This applies to streaming devices used with your TV (and in some cases, the TV itself).

I don't expect y'all to understand the majority of this article (it's some pretty interesting stuff!), it's the affected device list at the bottom of the article. Having one of those devices isn't guaranteed to be infected, but there's a good chance that it is.
