RDA Magma Clone Help

Status
Not open for further replies.
So I started doing my own ejuice and got a Magma clone to drip with to test the flavors. My questions are these:

I did a dual coil of 27 guage Kanthal with 7 wraps each and it came out to 0.69ohms. I was aiming for 0.5, so to get to that I would have to do 6 wraps each? Or go up in wrap count?

Also, I was expecting some good clouds and was disappointed that I'm getting more from my subtank mini. I'm using Japanese Organic Cotton and running 30W on my iStick 50W, also using 80/20 vg/pg.

I'm new to coils and making my juice, so any help and guidance from the veterans here would be much appreciated.

Hold it!

There are some crappy magma clones running around and they don't work worth a darn I even got one, several coils later I was thinking man, did I lose my touch or what? Where's the clouds?

They look like this one.
Flat inside the cap, Phillips head screws and tiny airholes_come to find out many of them don't even have the holes completely drilled out.

At least if we eliminate this aspect we can move to your wicks

Once I got the real 1;1 clone it started dumping clouds.

There's nothing more aggravating then trying to diagnose problems with a build only to find out it's the attys fault.

Even with an authentic magma, the emphasis would be chuckin' flavor, not clouds. There just isn't enough air flow even wide open and it's just gonna get very hot if you go too low on resistance.
That clone looks awful and lacks any of the saving graces of the 'leaky' authentic. I hope that's not what you're working with otherwise, as Thrasher stated, and the Rolling Stones' sang...you ain't gonna get no..satisfaction:(

No matter that this vid shows tiger wire, it is a good tutorial for demonstrating how to make decent duel coils and how to set them up in relation to the airflow.and how to wick this atty.

1: yes ; less wraps less ohms. but you've got an istick so easier to just adjust the istick.

2: clouds: you probably just need to adjust the position of the coils for the airflow to pass on the coil.

The OP is looking to sample his diy for flavor and is using a istick 50. He doesn't need to build to a mechs restrictions or use a .5 ohm coil and as suggested could go with 1-2 ohms with dual or single coil.

I think it is common knowledge that the magma can be built to make clouds, so don't misconstrue my original post as saying that it can't. The magma has great flavor potential and somewhat limited airflow which is why Paradigm made the Vengeance (version 2 magma) with improved airflow, quad coil options and a gigantic bore drip tip to that end.

Chasing flavor or chasing clouds requires the OP to experiment and arm himself with a few ideas about what he wants to do by learning from us here or watching video as offered already. We are simply trying to offer useful suggestions here, not contradict and bicker over the way we interpret each others posts.

The point here is not whether a magma can chuck clouds but what the OP needs to do to accomplish flavor testing of his diy efforts

Thank you all for the advice. I am biting off a fair amount at the moment, making my own juice, first RDA and first time making my own coils.
The clone I got is made by Infinite, I believe, it works pretty good. The first two coils I made were pretty ugly but worked well and heated evenly from the center. I used a 3mm flathead for my first attempt and even though it worked, it needed improvement.
I downloaded Steam Engine and put in my values and came up with 5.5 wraps for the coils. With the first set at 7 the leads came down at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions (while looking down the length of the coil), so I did 5 wraps and bent both leads to come down at the 6 o'clock position coming to 5.5 wraps. After installing the new coils it came to .55 ohms, I'm happy with that result.

I placed both coils almost directly over both air inlets and replaced the wicks. I made the cotton feel tight when pulling it through, but not tight enough that I pulled the coils as well. It wicks well and vapes better, but the airflow still feels restricted even when wide open with both 3mm vents lined up. My Subtank Mini still chucks bigger clouds, but the flavor is there and ultimately that's really what I'm after.

For those asking why I didn't just do a single 1.2-1.5ohm coil, I figured this would be good practice for rebuilding my Subtank coils, which I prefer at .5 ohms.

Again, thank you for all the responses, I'm more than willing to hear any other advice you guys can come up with.

Is the inside of the top cap domed like the original? That was one of the 1st questions about this clone regarding it's performance.
3mm ID (inside diameter) is kinda large. You might try a 2 - 2.5 mm with more or the same wraps and different gauge wire to get the same resulting ohms.
Also, mess around with how close the coils are above the air holes on the deck for flavor adjustment.

Good luck
