I'm so confused!! I've been reading about e-cigs for the past few days and have decided to give them a try but there is SOOO much information to sort through. It's kind of like when personal computers first came on the market- there were so many manufacturers, the technology was evolving at a lightning pace and everybody was claiming that their PC was the best.

One of my areas of concern (and confusion) is regarding maintenance. I downloaded the manual for a brand I'm considering (the new joyetech e-Com C Twist) but there is no mention of how to look after it. What needs cleaning and how often? How often does the battery need to be replaced (I'm assuming they eventually won't recharge)? How often does the atomizer head need to be replaced and how can I tell when it does? What spare parts should I keep on hand?
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

You really only need to perform regular maintenance on the tank you decide to buy for your battery. The top of the battery has some threads and a contact which you should clean often to prevent a drop in voltage. As for the tank, you can clean the entire thing. The drip tip, the coil, the wick, the inside of the tank itself, the seals... Doing so will provide a multitude of benefits and keep it working like new. There's a cheaper and more satisfying alternative to buying prebuilt coil heads, and that's building them yourself.

As for the battery replacement, you won't have to worry about that for a long time. Generally you'll only have to replace a battery every year, maybe longer depending on how often you use it. You'll know when it needs replacing when it no longer holds a charge as well and fails to charge to its max capacity. The coil heads should be replaced when the flavour starts to taste off or the coil is performing poorly. Just make sure it's the coil itself and not the battery dying.

Hi, the ego twist should be charged daily and when the battery wears completely out then it's time for a new one but they last quite some time depending. When using a atomizer and you start to taste burned flavor or less vapor it's time to change coils. I always took a q tip cotton and cleaned the connector wherected the atomizer goes. This keeps a clean connection. Depending on the atomizer most tanks can be cleaned with water and disacembled, then put back together with a fresh coil. As for spare parts you might consider two ego c twists, one as a backup. You might want to take a look at the vision spinner two, it's a little nicer made in my opinion then the twist. I have both. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Trust me...you will be a veteran in just a few weeks or months. Things were pretty simple when I started (simple batteries and cartomizers), but I was still confused. I can only guess what it is like for new vapers today.

Batteries, especially ego types, are pretty simple devices. Just a simple wipe of the connection end on occasion, and every so often cleaning the connection with alcohol, is all that is needed. I do strongly suggest a backup or two. You never know when that battery is going to fail, or jump out of your hand onto the concrete or into your full cup of coffee...or in one case, dive off the roof while hanging xmas lights. I've had batteries last more than a year and some only last a few months...it's a crap shoot.

There are many different types of atomizers (or tanks, or clearomizers) that it would be hard to comment on each one. Generally they all have similar components and you will learn real quickly when they go bad. Bad taste, lack of vapor, gurgling and leaking, thoseare mostly the symptoms no matter what device you use. For most types, you can find a youtube for cleaning and maintaining. Again...backups.

The bottom line is that experience is the best teacher. You'll get the hang of it.
