Amazingly, one of the busiest roads in the UK has been closed for most of the day after passengers of the 'megabus' (UK's Grayhound) complained of a man pouring liquid into a smoking box.

Why none of them asked him what he was doing before calling the emergency services is anyone's guess, but there you are.

Yeah - it's been the main news story in the UK all day. The emergency services response was impressive to say the least and, of course, you have to be pretty thankful that it wasn't a terrorist incident.

Still, this has probably ruined quite a few people's day.

Unbelievable.

Oh well. We can kiss goodbye to being able to use E-Cigs in public places in the UK now. Watch all the ANTZ jump all over this one too. Brilliant.

Nice one Bag-vaping dude. Way to frickin' go there man.

Plus. What dumbass calls the police?? I mean, really???? I bet the guy was of middle-eastern origin too. Obvs a terrorist with his "smoking bag" MUST BE ... .

Oh well. At least the cat is out of the bag now. They are "health aids" according to the media. And as everyone knows, the media tell the whole truth all the time, don't they kiddies.

We can only hope that the term "health aids" finds frequent use It would be nice it found frequent use over here in the states. While it might not be perfectly accurate it would at least help remove some of the stigma associated with them.

I agree that the reporting passengers overreacted. People have become so passive when it relates to their own security. "I'll just let someone "qualified" ask the questions. Had it have been a REAL threat, BOOM! Longer story ensues. None the less, "Let's call the copperz, because I'm unfamiliar with what it is YOU'RE doing."

I'm happy about the "health improvement aid for smokers" quote!

Strictly speaking, the incident was not "caused by an electronic cigarette." It was caused by ignorance and misunderstanding.

Although, as someone who often happily vapes in public, I'm quick to inform anyone near me what I am doing. Since I understand that most people really don't have a clue if your PV isn't one of those "cigarette look-alikes." That guy should have clarified what his "smoking plastic bag" (?) was all about to anyone around him, the conductor, etc. Especially these days when the general public is a bit squirrely about terorism and bombs. Some of the responsibility lies with the vaping dude.

SOME of the responsibility?? Some?

He thought (but didn't say) "I'm not smoking, I'm VAPING, so I can just go right ahead with my bottle of unknown liquid, bag, battery, wires, cartridge, god knows what else at the back of this bus, start producing clouds of smoke and no one is going to turn a hair, frown, wonder why they can't see anymore through the fog.. start to worry about being blown up..that just won't happen because I'm VAPING.."

Come on.. I vape, you vape, we all vape on here and love it. Say the word VAPE to a member of the general ignorance (I mean public) and they'll think you're some East European about to sexually assault them.! (V = R, never mind, silly joke)

Anyway I agree with yours and everyone's comments (just in case you think I am attacking you) but this guy was such an idiot! Unbelievable stupidity!!!

But this is the REAL issue for me:

Even if we assume each member of the public knows about and accepts vaping as NOT smoking, agrees that its essentially harmless certainly to them and almost certainly to us who do it, even if the authorities welcome it as a "health improvement aid" and don't tax it to death or ban it outright, should we really have carte blanche to vape where ever we like?? I think not. Many juices aren't odour free on the exhale especially naturally extracted tobacco flavours, and amongst non vapers/smokers its still a pretty anti-social thing to do. But doing it in a confined space like a bus or a plane I think SHOULD be illegal. I also think it should be illegal to consume fast foods like McD's in confined public places for the same reason..same with loud earphones and small games consoles etc. Why should we be able to subject those around us who have no immediate route of escape to our own anti-social habits?? Why?

oh and one other thing before I let this story go from my mind..

I was lucky (?) enough to be at home when the news broke on UK tv, and I was so shocked by how quickly and how many different emergency services arrived on scene. Army, Airforce, police, TV crews.. hell I am sure I saw Steven Spielberg on the edge of the screen at one point..! The response was faster than 9/11 and 7/7!!

That was one hellova expensive vape.. ! Now, who could have financed such a spectacular event. I don't know, lets ask some tobacco industry execs...

I'm just saying!!!

Haha, Ed - or to look at it another way, a pretty good 'live' practice run for the Olympics?

Also, I do agree with you. It was pretty foolish of the vaper in question to start using it on the bus. I suspect it was not a device that most non-vapers are familiar with, and it would have been quite frightening.

Cheers CKC - I've just been chatting with BBC West Midlands too. Nice guy hosting the show, and I think I got some good info across.

It had to be a battery issue. I can press the button on my Provari and let it sizzle until the 16 second cutoff ... no vapor.

As long as we are an obscure minority, we will be considered freaks. It you think about it, how many stealth vapers have you spotted while out and about? Me? None in way over two years. I'm fairly observant and probably would have noticed a few in that time.
