I received my 32 gauge kanthal and 3mm silica to try making my own coils for my Dream Fatty clone. The first one I doubled up the wick and just haphazardly wrapped about 5 wraps. Looked ugly and only half of the coils turned red so tossed it. Second one I used a nail and wrapped about 4 wraps and threaded the wick into it. Was working pretty good but I wanted to try more wraps so I made one with about 10 wraps and kept them pretty close together. Measured 3 ohms. Worked awesome. It seems like most people use about 4-5 wraps so I was wondering why that is? Has there been any thread on how many wraps people prefer and why?

One thing I learned, making coils is really fun. I want to try a bunch of different techniques but gonna wait until I get a torch, because while breaking in I seem to get a pretty strong taste from the wick for a while. Torching the wick and coil I'm guessing breaks it in quick and gets rid of bad wick taste?

Making these wicks really sold me on RBAs. I'm kind of glad I lost the premades I bought. I thought it would be a lot more frustrating but it turns out to be kinda fun. Seems like all the variations someone could do are endless. I'm trying to watch videos on wrapping techniques but wading through the crap is a little tiresome lol.

Jerms, I think Skinny Pete is probably referring to TomCatts thread on Resistance Wire.

If you are making that many wraps perhaps you should rather get a higher resistance wire. I would recommend you read nz1001's thread on rba-general-info for a deeper explanation.

Thanks for the links. I had missed that first thread because I have the stickies turned off on tapatalk. Lots of good info, and I could even understand some of it lol. Nothing like getting into RBAs to feel like a noob again after years of vaping.

Definately want to try different gauges of wire. Also, wanting to try SS mesh under the coil on silica wicks, seems many prefer the flavor that way.

dont toss uneven glowing coils, learn to adjust the spacing with a pin or needle or something that is all you have to do to even out the glowing,

I use a fat paperclip and doubled up wick when i wrap them the paperclip holds it stiff and makes it easy and when you pull the clip out there is usually just enough slack so the coil burns properly

Thanks that's great advice! That first coil really did deserve to be thrown, it was quite ugly lol. Can I use that needle trick if I don't double up the wick? It won't be too loose? That would be easier than threading it into the coil like I did.
