A follow up, the cotton wicks are working really well in my eRolls, much better taste and juice flow ...

But in the Ovale Elips, with a 360 mAh battery, they burn out quickly, usually within an hour or two. This has been a problem even with the stock silica wicks, but they do last much longer, sometimes for weeks with a "good one" ...

This was with 100% PG menthol juice, very thin. Maybe I did chain vape a bit too much, and the cotton I used was just stuff from a medicine bottle, nothing special ...

I'll continue to make cotton wicks for the eRoll, they are awesome. But I ordered some 2mm pre-made and oxidized stainless steel wicks, and silica wicks for the Elips, VaporKings has them cheap. If I like the steel better, maybe I'll order a sheet of 350 mesh and roll my own wicks. But they're only 39 cents each, already rolled and oxidized ...

Haven't tried cotton in the eCab yet, its a 320 mAh battery, and might burn out as it did in the Elips. The eCab is on "time out", always seemed too "airy" for my taste, even with one inlet blocked ...

And as chefkieth noted, the eRoll does stay cooler with a cotton wick, and the battery holds up longer ... :thumb:

I made my first cotton wicks and it works at eroll.how many days i can use one.when is time to change?

Well, I was a cotton wick convert for about a week (see my raving earlier in this thread), but now I'm a stainless mesh fan. Seriously, it seems intimidating, but the hardest part is breaking down and buying the mesh. I bought a huge sheet from my local b&m for $10 - well worth it. There's years worth of wicks there.

But a big thanks to OP for posting a great cotton tutorial - it's a great skill to know.

Cheers!

And if you're lazy like me, VaporKings has pre-rolled and pre-oxidized wicks in both 325 and 400 mesh. They come in a pack of 5, each is about 1 1/2 inches long, enough to get 4 wicks per piece if you're careful. For $1.95 for a 5 pack, its worth it to let someone else do the delicate part of the work. The VaporKings part codes are DIYATOM-WICKMESH-325 and DIYATOM-WICKMESH-400 ...

I had to partially unroll and trim, they're just a bit too fat for the spike hole ... :D

If what I'm seeing is any indication that Joye has upped their prices, someone could create a rebuilding niche for themselves. I'm talking seeing them for $29 and change for a box of 5. That's about $6.00 a piece! If it is Joye doing this, which I assume it is because they regulate vendor prices, then I'm afraid they're going to price themselves out of the market. Of course, they could learn a lesson and drop them back. Right now I'm pretty ticked as I bought 6 Joye CCs plus 3 Eroll kits.

I just checked, Kokovapes still has them for $22.19/5 pack, with the Ovale brand on them, either standard resistance or LR. These seem to be a little better made, the coils are straight and even. I've heard that Ovale has better quality control ...

I hope that one of the ECF members who is good at making tutorial videos will experiment with cotton-filled stainless steel wicks and refine the technique. So far, it seems to have the advantages of both, good taste and durability ... :D

This is a stainless steel mesh wrap of the original wick. I guess Joyetech put it in there because the silica they use tends to fray, which makes it hard or impossible to thread it through those tiny holes especially when you're running a mass production process.

It's not needed when you're using cotton.

Don't think there's much to refine. You can basically make the cotton wick as shown in my video and then wrap it up in one or two layers of SS.

I have some SS here and the head I have on my eRoll right now needs some love so I'm going to try and see how cotton wrapped in SS performs.

Probably gonna get around to it by tomorrow or the day after. Will post results then.
