I would rather buy Chinese. The country that makes space ships. The country that is a manufacturing heart of the world. You people are still living in the previous millennium. China now has much more manufacturing experience than any other country. Sure, they are still lagging in aircraft and cars, but we are not buying jets, aren't we?

I don't worry about their manufacturing skills, but I do worry about their quality control.

It is just all about cheap labor, government subsidies and no EPA to deal with. The companies making quality goods in China- like FoxConn, control every aspect of the manufacturing, QA and QC. The company I work for now has factories in China which are only capable of making Class 1and Class 2 circuit boards. They can pump out a lot of them, but can't make Class 3 to save their lives. They tried. The workers live on site and aren't motivated. They really don't have anything to go home to or to look forward to. I was talking to an engineer about this just yesterday, who spent a year in Gaungdong. They were incapable of adapting to ongoing production issues. They are a labor pool which can do assembly and push buttons. The engineers can't run the production floor. It's more cost effective to make them in the US, given the materials used ; plus our customers- the military, the aerospace and satellite industry and medical equipment manufacturers just won't use boards made in China, which can't be certified as Class 3...

That isn't why:

Can an Asian PCB company supply military PCBs under the ITAR?

Beware that under ITAR § 126.1, U.S. companies are prohibited, among other things, from using Chinese and Vietnamese manufacturers to fill orders for ITAR-controlled PCB’s.

https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/regulations_laws/documents/official_itar/ITAR_Part_126.pdf

They are worried about covert espionage.

Can't build

I'm going by what my immediate supervisor, who is an engineer told me when we were talking about this yesterday. One of the factories in China burned to the ground when someone overflowed a tank with 'chemistry'-probably a potassium oxide of some sort, and someone tried to clean it with rags, which then caught fire in the trash. The fire went up through the ventilation system and travelled through 5 floors and the building lit up like a Christmas tree. This was a week after someone drained a tank with 75 ounces of gold, which went down the drain. They tried for a year to make Class 3 boards there.
Stryker boards are ITAR, but that doesn't mean BAE or others couldn't buy China boards...

Statistically speaking, most electronics factory accidents would happen in China. Then again, it's not like our "superior" western technology keeps oil rigs in i.e the Gulf of Mexico from the occasional mishap.

Or how the brightest among our otherwise superior western minds manage to bump the wrong thingamabob, like the Demon Core.

Read all the posts if you don't know what a short is or the myriad of ways in which you can short your PV circuit and blow your face off. A basic understanding of circuitry and how the positive side of a circuit and the negative side of a circuit interact, is important. Most have no clue. Translating this information into setting up gear is even more difficult for most. I think it's a Chinese plan to take over the US.

You can back peddle all you like. It was you who went US/military/blah - ITAR

As long as Humans are factored in, and we are required even to automate, crap can and will go wrong.

I was surprised that the first dead physicist was only 24yrs old. Apparently w/o proper supervision.
And the physicist, using a flat blade screwdriver wedged between two half spheres, adjusting the gap to keep the core from going critical:w00t::thumb::lol: talk about a mad scientist...
