So I ordered a manual shorty just to try it out and see what I thought. It came as a regular length but no big deal really. I love the easy draw and vapor production on it though. So now I'm wondering, has anyone tried opening the air holes on an auto just a little to let more air through. In my head that would lead to a much easier draw. Not just the small side holes but the center one as well. Or would this screw up the vacuum switch? Any thoughts folks?

Depending on the orientation of the manual when it is screwed tightly onto the socket, the button can be depressed when you press it into the slot in the case. Mine is like that, so I use the PCC as a charger at night, and mostly for my reg autos that I don't really use that much. As Adrenalynn said, you can open the holes in the side a bit, but use a good drill press with a short stop. Keep in mind though that if you open the side holes on an auto, you may no longer have enough vacuum to operate the switch, rendering the battery essentially useless.

I've found a condom on the LED end turns the battery on... unless of course you're cutting the end of the condom off.

Oh... hmmm after I posted this I realized that this could be completely different with the manual battery. Sorry.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me yesterday; my auto battery (I know, wrong thread) accidentally got a condom pushed onto the LED (I carry my batt in on of the V4L pouches and I had an extra condom in the bottom), and when I pulled my batt out of the pouch I noticed that the cart was smoking! Is that supposed to happen?

Do go mucking about with the center post. You might as well just toss it in the garbage first and save time later. ;)

Jam - I use these: - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices and this: - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices and cut by hand. They also had [apparently store only] teensie little carbide cutters that I use too, again by hand.

Cheaper than dirt and work really well. When you break 'em (and break 'em you will) -no loss. They're pennies each. buy a handful of sets.

Even though I have a couple REALLY good drill presses, I wouldn't use them or even the mill for this work. The Dremel Drillpress attachment roxxors for tiny light work. But [at least for me] nothing beats the really fine control of hand turning in soft metal for <1mm holes.

Thanks Adrenalynn; I have never shopped there, but will try out the one in our area - especially if they're cheap! We have a very good machine shop in our lab building, so I usually work in there after hours when I have personal stuff to muck around with. This way my wife doesn't get AS mad with the amount of space I already take up with my numerous "hobbies".

Lando, I think she's a woman, not a girl; way to score brownie points though! :D:D:D

I don't get all uppity about the "girl/woman" tag. I reserve that for those that just assume I'm male. ;)

There are "rules" for shopping at Harbor Freight.

#1 Never buy anything with a battery. Ever. But doubly-so for battery-operated tools.
#2 Don't buy things you're going to use every day. Light-duty only - or cheap consumables (like bits) are fine unless it violates #3
#3 Never _ever_ buy anything for which you'll have a "critical need" at 3am for.

That said - I've got tools from them I use daily that I can't kill for love or money. They have a warranty that looks like V4L's. You bring it in, drop it on the counter, they rake it rudely into a box and you walk out the door with a new one. I've never even been asked for a receipt... But that's on those super-rare occasions that I buy anything even worth returning. I have band saws I haven't been able to kill in 15+ years of daily use. A sawzall knock-off that I used commercially for several years. The genuine article died after a year - the HF version just keeps going (for nearly $300 less!).

Their multimeters, the super cheap ones you can get for less than $3 aren't terribly accurate, but if a few tenths of a volt precision is all you need - buy them by the case when they're on sale for $2.49, toss the whole meter in the garbage when the battery dies. They actually work fabulously well.

It's all Chinese knock-off "junk". But if you understand the tool and can poke and prod and understand the limitations/know how to find a good one, they can last a lifetime.

    I have a life-long love-hate relationship with Harbor Freight... :)
