I have lots of thread subs.
Some are huge threads. ie 500 pages long.
Want to read from start to finish.
SO.. read 20 pages. Want to come back later.
Don't remember where I left off.
The new post notification is great.
But above example, the 1st 20 pages not new,
the remaining 480 pages still are.
Would be nice to have the subscription page know I want to goto page 21 as new.

Confusing to describe... but you get it?
Doesn't appear this is possible?
How?
If not, a feature request.

A 'posts unread' feature.

Thanks

edit: I've often seen people make 'mark my place' posts (if you will) to get around this apparently missing feature.
Clutters up the threads.. so I don't do it.

The site does that for you.

Open the first page of the thread. In the light blue bar above post #1 click on the View First Unread link. It will take you to where you left off in the thread. (That link doesn't show in this thread here because there is less than 1 page of posts.)

For this to work don't go anywhere else but page one first. If you jump right to the last page of a thread and then click View First Unread... you just messed it up because the last page is now your first unread post.

To help anyone wanting to troubleshoot/confirm/verify:

1. What's new / todays posts
2. click on a thread title I have never been to
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-vaping-discussion/633539-focalecig-chat-part-2-a.html
3. on page 1
4. subscribe to thread.
5. read page 2
6. click on 'Setting' on the upper toolbar
7. subscriptions are listed here
8. having followed the above process and similar for many thread tests, it 'breaks' from here going back to that thread
9a) click the go to first new post blue button
or
9b) click on the thread title, and click on blue 'first unread' button
or
9c) click on page 1 or 2, and then click 'first unread' button

Any of option 9 takes me to page.... 237 (edit: out of 263 pages) ... NOT page 3

edit: from this point forward, it will then take me to pg 238 etc. going forward working as it should.

Thanks and good luck finding the glitch

Did you at any time mark the forums as read? If so, regardless of whether you've read the thread or not, the database is cleared of any locations that you've read and pick up from the newest posting points.

In addition, if you visit a post further into a thread than what you've read, it marks it at the furthest point that you've read.

Hi Retired1! Thanks for the reply.

Not anytime during this process. I DID mark the forums as read ONCE, maybe 2 weeks ago?

Ahhhh.....Excellent question.
There in lies the problem, I hadn't considered that and hadn't thought that through.
Having marked the FORUM read weeks ago, ALL the markers have been altered.

Anyway to UNMARK the forum as read?

Thanks!

edit: And you HAVE found the glitch. User 'error'
I really thought I had discovered a bug.

The markers are stored server side, and once you mark the forums as read, those are cleared and it starts keeping track of what you've read after that point. Unfortunately, once you've cleared the database by marking all forums as read, there's no way to restore back to it's original state.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Forum actions Mark Forums Read
This will mark all posts on the site as read.
You will not be taken to a listing with check boxes to select which forums to select as read.
This will affect/mark View First Unread message across the entire site.
This action will be 'permanent'
