[h=2]Mayo Clinic Slipping into Medical Malpractice and Social Endangerment[/h] Filed under: Miscellaneous Vaping NewsLeave a comment

The once prestigious Mayo Clinic, supposedly a bastion of medical expertise and encyclopedic knowledge of all things medicine, has allowed themselves to be influenced by the same media fear-mongering and agenda driven pseudo-science that plagues the world of medical laypersons. One Dr. Richard Hurt (who should immediately have his license to practice medicine removed and prosecuted for criminal public endangerment in my opinion) recently released several statements on behalf of the official position of the Mayo Clinic organization. There is nothing really new about his remarks. He is essentially taking the same party line that they have been taught to parrot by their lords, demonstrating a gross ignorance of scientific and medical research and thereby falsely accusing honest medical researchers of misleading the public to line their own pockets. For those of you who are reading this from your thick-carpeted office inside the fortress walls of the Mayo Clinic, this is referred to as the psychological unconscious act of projection. You all are blaming other scientists of greed and corruption because you can’t understand why a person in the medical research community couldn’t be greedy and corrupt.

“Dr.” Hurt’s statements were exactly this, “One of the solutions that the nicotine and the e-cigarette is dissolved into is called propylene glycol which is a cousin of antifreeze and why anybody would want to puff on something and put that in their mouth is amazing.” This belligerent and deprecating (not to mention erroneous) statement shows us a number of important things about Hurt’s persona: 1. He’s ignorant of science, and 2. He’s insulting and downright abusive of people who have worked hard to improve their health (lest we forget, part of the oath taken by doctors is to ‘do no harm,’ which is kinda hard to do if you’re telling people to stop being healthier.) Basically, in the words of one of my favorite bloggers, Michael Siegel, over at The Rest of the Story, Richard Hurt is calling those who use E-cigarettes as a way to stay off of analog (tobacco) cigarettes .......ing ....... Guess they didn’t cover logical fallacies in medical school, what with this being a more than obvious red herring/ad hominum attack.

Hurt (Sorry, I’m not going to use the salutation “Dr.” in front of his name anymore… I don’t think it’s appropriate) went on to insult the vaping community even more when he snidely retorted to the scientific claims of the pro E-cig community with the statement, “we use evidence-based medicine…” (Emphasis added) The rest of the statement is the same stuff we’ve heard a thousand times. But these generally-accepted medical “experts” at the prestigious Mayo Clinic carry a lot of weight with statements about their adherence to the scientific method, which we all learned… and learned to hate… in High School and College Gen Ed classes. They’re trusting the public to hang on their every word with the resignation of ‘well, they’re doctors. They know more than I do... (Click here to read the rest of my article.)

As a medical professional, I cannot stress enough a few points (because I totally agree with what the OP wrote) :)

1. Mayo (as stated above) relies heavily on past reputation. There are many facilities across the country that score higher on numerous surveys than Mayo. Like better mortality indexes, higher patient satisfaction, and higher staff satisfaction. They will take any (and I mean ANY) patient that is presented to them.....and that is not always a good thing. Mayo is a good place, but not great. They have slid quite a bit over the past decade.

2. This is probably an older physician who has no desire to learn about new technology. I have a strong dislike for physicians over the age of 55. They are archaic, treat nurses like dog poop, and subscribe to the old school boys club of burying their heads in the sand while enjoying a round of golf and scotch/cigars with the other good ol' boys. Uugh. puke.

3. The Onassis center in Greece HAS evidence based research about vaping. If Dr. Hurt pulled his head of his .... he would see the EB research. The newest research just came out earlier this month about e-liquids cytotoxic effect on myocardial cells. With the exception of some WTA and cinnamon, the rest passed with excellent results. Compared to cigarette smoke cytotoxic effects, the contest wasn't even close, even with the higher risk WTA and cinnamons. I believe the clearstream data could be evidence based as well......along with the 2 hour presentation that was given a year ago at the cardiology convention in Europe. All evidence based, repeatable, and credible.

4. I am so tired of this politican and medical professional "bury head in sand/bad mouth vaping" mentality. It is uneducated, inappropriate, and makes me lose respect for medical and political officials on a daily basis. The level of uneducation is quite appalling. Given the alternatives are to use cessation methods that are barely 5% effective OR to keep puffing away on the COPD sticks, you would think that at least a DOCTOR would be open to exploring vaping a little more.

5. NURSES support this method way more frequently than any physician. Because we are much more awesome, we are open minded, and lets face it: nurses are who really run the medical world. Where I work as an adult critical care nurse, if we left it up to the doctors taking care of you, most would never leave the hospital. Just this month, I have taught DOCTORS how to put orders in, WHAT to order, how to run a code, and how to pronounce a patient as dead. One goon actually pulled a sheet over the deceased patients' head. Uh, no.....that is TV theatrics on Grey's Anatomy, not real world stuff doc. I cringe every July when the new crop graduates and comes on board. It means I play doctor AND nurse for the first 6 months while they learn how to read a patient chart.

Great post NICnurse, but then I always enjoy your posts :thumb:. Can you please explain more about the part in bold? I think I know what you mean, just not sure.

Here he is discussing the "end game" like there's some remote possibility tobacco could or even should be totally banned. He goes on about all the deaths, but completely ignores other, actual viable alternatives to prevent the "5 million worldwide deaths from tobacco use every year" like smokeless tobacco and harm reduction. Just another quit or die propagandist.
