I have a colonial mod (from the second batch I think) that I have used about 5 days total but no longer use it since it does not fire reliably. You have to push the button a few times since sometimes it will barely engage and sometimes not at all. Not a good experience with my first-ever non-clone.

My favorite mod is a copper XXIX clone that I painted with black bedliner. Hits hard, and every time, and costs $20. Of course, it's a hybrid so you have to get a compatible atty (like the tobh). But you can't beat the small size and tiny voltage drop. Out of my 15 or so mods, it is the one I use the most by far. Find the top-rated copper one on fasttech.

I have a King II clone and it has always worked well, plus has a lockout, although I rarely use the lockout since the button is recessed. It has always fired reliably, but is pretty large and heavy.

Have two 4nine clones and neither one works reliably. One was the cheapest fasttech version, and it never worked at all, despite using various replacement magnets. The other is an expensive pre-patina'ed and clear coated one so looks excellent, but is even less reliable that the Colonial despite also using various magnets to try to make it work better.

Don't feel so bad, a friend of mine has an authentic copper 4Nine and he has always had button issues basically since day one with it. Even authentic mods are not foolproof, there are lots of people with authentic versions that have had button issues.

One of my favorite Stainless mods is currently my $20 FT Surfrider clone which is basically identical to the XXIX you like so much. Fires every time and the switch adjustment is really well thought out!

Check out the smpl mod. No black ones, only brass, copper & stainless but I love mine! It's very tiny, shorter than my Reo Grand. No topcap, just a bottom switch.

I have a clone of the Paragon V2 Midnight. One thing that kept me from buying the authentic is that it was originally supposed to have a rhodium coating, but they switched it to black chrome to reduce costs. The chrome plating reduces the conductivity a bit. It's not a deal breaker, but it definitely does not hit nearly as hard as my other pure copper mods. I don't know if the authentic has the same voltage drop as the clone. Also the chrome plating has already started to get scratched from just carrying it around in my pocket. I don't know if the plating on the authentic is more durable, but it's a possible concern for spending almost $200.

thats the only thing that keeps me from buying these color plated mods. they tend to scratch off. looks like the paragon midnight is out of the picture. i was thinking of getting that oros clone but its shaped like the valkyrie. any other suggestion

The Paragon isn't plated, it's a carbon fiber body wrap that you'd have to go out of your way to scratch or nick. It's a lot easier to care for than my various metal mods.
