Melted carts?

Day 3
(though I'm still smoking cigarettes, so just "day 3" of vaping)

I've been using my 501 regularly since I opened it; loving it! Figured out how to work/use my chargers (they need a youTube vid for that!); I've been swapping out batts a few times a day -- no prob w/ charging batts. Figured out I need to squeeze out the juice on the prefilled carts and fill them with my eliquids to get a taste I like right away.

But this evening I got a definite burning smell/taste when vaping. I looked at the cart immediately, and saw the wick was a bit singed. Worse was that the cart was melted on two sides (I think where it touches the atomizer's metal bridge). I got rid of that cart, but wondered if it's normal for the carts to MELT like that?!

I think I used that cart almost all of the three days -- I swapped batts primarily. So is three days of "regular" usage about right for a cart's life?

Or is it not normal for a cart to melt (and maybe there's something wrong with my battery or my technique?)

The batt does heat up a lot sometimes, but I figured that was normal.

Also, should I switch atomizers when I switch batts?

Man, I feel like I'm smoking/vaping TOO much if I MELT the cart!

Thanks for any guidance!

I had the same problem when i started out - the problem is the way you are putting the cart on the atomizer.

there is a picture around here somewhere of the correct way, but basically - you will see a white rectangle inside the atomizer, you need to line up the cart and white rectangle so they match eachother (if that makes sense - rectangle to rectangle) it makes sure the hottest parts of the atty are furthest away from the coil.

It also sounds like you used the cart for too long, - you should carry a small bottle of e-juice and top the cart off every 10-20 puffs or so. you can always pop the cart off and have a look if it is wet or not, if it's not wet, top it off.

If the problem continues you can trim a little bit of the cart off which also helps alot.

Don't worry about the wick - it isn't burning, it's just old/burned e juice in there - if you wash the atomizer it will probably become white again.

good luck!

The problem with lining up the cart is that is doesn`t always work with the whistle tip aligning with the a manual button. Just trim the cart 1/16 - 1/8 and they last me until the become too loose that they don`t hold tight on the atty anymore. IMO that`s when they`re worn out.

Thanks -- probably true about not keeping the wick wet enough with juice. I takes getting used to, learning when to refill. Heh, usually I don't think about it unless the vapor gets low or the led flashes (low battery).

zbass, would the avg life of your trimmed carts be longer than a few days then? (I'm just trying to figure out how many carts to order.)

...Im too lazy to be accurate with lining it up :)
...Im still using the carts my kit came with in decemeber - I have a bunch of others too but I havent thrown any out yet lol

All of the above. I use whistle tips too like Zbass, and the button always ends up in an awkward position. And even if I used round, I would be too lazy like CJ. Carts can be used for a long time if you replace the filler or mod your carts...until they become too loose like Zbass says, then you can dump 'em. If you're going to save your old carts, don't forget to save the condoms too.

CJ thanks for the tip, I can get attached to a cart! Weird I know, but they just seem to hit a sweet spot on the draw. I find it funny, and would like to do a poll of those that prefer the whistletip. When my wife and I ordered out 1st kits she`s like "be sure they have round tips". She started using my whistletips, and won`t go back to a round tip.

I met up with a local vaper and member here who has a 901, and I tried it. The whistle tips on the 901 are thinner than the 510s, and I really liked them, but Haven`t found where you can get a thinner whistle tip for the 510?

Oh! Thanks for the info... the one I discarded was pretty melted on two ends (and was making a burning smell), but I didn't think about trimming it. The wadding looked singed, too, so I just figured I'd burned it up.

Good to know that carts can last that long! I've already got two orders in for juices from Tasty Vapor and Pure Smoker, and have to make another order from somewhere for some VG juice to mix into those I think. If I needed carts too, I wanted to know how many. I was thinking 3carts/week last night! Now it sounds like I could get away with another [backup] 5-pack of carts. Awesome!
