I'm sure that this has been asked a bunch of times already, but I've searched ECF for the past hour and haven't found the answers that I'm looking for...at least not exactly what I'm looking for. Here's some background info. I've had genesis style atties for a while now, but I haven't really gotten around to setting them up until recently. At this point, I've gotten some fairly good results...and by fairly good I mean a hell of a lot better than carto tanks but not quite as good as what I see on people's video reviews. I'm getting unbelievable flavor and adaquate amounts of vapor (50/50 mix), but I am not getting a good enough amount of wicking. At the moment, my setup is as follows:

- 400 mesh with 32g kanthal (at least I think that's what I got with the gen atty when I purchased it months ago)
- wick made from approx 30x100mm 400mesh (oxidized before and after rolling) and rolled around a small pin to leave a central canal
- coil is wrapped at 3/2 and typically measures in at around 1.3Ω before it levels off around 1.6Ω
- I always keep the fill hole screw in because I don't want to have to worry about leaks when I'm out of the house
- gen atty is being used on a fully mech mod

Here are my questions:
1. What mesh (325, 400 or 500) gives the best wicking action?
2. What style of wick results in the best wicking (solid vs open, thick vs thin)?
3. I've read about people wrapping their mesh around silica wicks...would I get better results with this method?
4. What gauge kanthal has a lower resistance (28awg, 30awg, 32awg, etc)? Seeing as how I'm using a fully mech mod, my goal is to keep the coil at LR while still being able to wrap at least a 4/3 coil (ideally a 5/4 or 6/5) in order to cover a longer length of the wick.

Thanks in advanced for everyone's help, and any other tips/recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Happy New Year!

the gauge of wick seems related to juice thickness, i have tried all 3 from 325-500 and dont see much difference beyond 500 wicking like a straw, soon as i put juice in its wet fast.
i have never had luck with solid wicks i use a paper clip to twist them, and make them fairly sturdy.
usually wicking is improved from leaving the fill plug out and unless tilted a lot doesnt seem to contribute to more leaking ( i use mine out and about always and never any problem)

i never tried the hybrid wick as i oxidize after rolling them and afraid i will burn it.

the higher the gauge the higher the resistance (and the smaller the wire)

Thanks Thrasher. I just found the sticky about kanthal (funny how the stickies are always the last place I look) and it looks like 28awg is the right one for me. I have a bit of 400 mesh still so maybe I'll just go ahead and pick up some 500 to see if it works any better for me. Most of my juices are predominantly VG (lowest ratio is 50/50) so I hope that the 500 wicks better than the 400 I'm using.

I went ahead and removed the fill plug, and it does wick a whole lot better. So much so that it would definitely leak when I'm out of the house. I know that gens are a lot of trial and error, but even if I can't find a better way to set the gen up, I'm still better off than when I was using carto tanks.

Thanks again for the info!

i do seem to notice a good difference between 400 & the 500. i do prefer the 500. also prefer the solid wick, no real center hole. not sure of your specific device, but for the DID, ac-9 and aga-t, i start out with a mesh size of about 1-1/2 in x 4 -1/2 in. after a few burns it becomes a pretty solid wick. good luck
