Do you guys/gals measure your coil wire exactly? If so do you cut it to the exact length or do you mark it some how? Reason I ask is that the wire needs to be an exact length for a desired resistance.

This app I'm using for a .8ohm dual coil build says the wire needs to be 2.213 inches

You can get a rough idea if you put a bend in the end of your wire, say one inch from the end and put one probe of a DMM there. Then run it the other probe along the wire until you're in the ballpark for the resistance you want and put a bend there. Add an inch to that and the bit between the 2 bends is the bit you wrap.

It's simple and it'll work for any gauge of wire. As you gain more experience, you'll know what to make them. Just make sure you test them all before you fire them. Even the best have bad days!

Coiling Calculator

Here are a few links for you regarding building coils and getting the resistance just where you want it:
1. Steam Engine
2. Coil Toy Calculator

Make sure to check your build with an ohm reader or DMM before putting it on your mod and firing it.

Yeah, I'm using the steam engine one. It's pretty cool!! I'll check out the coil toy link here in a minute!!

Consider yourself very lucky if you nail an exact ohm, more realistically you can expect to be within +/-0.15 of your target.

Leg length and coil springing away from the mandrel creating a larger inside diameter of the coil will conspire against your best efforts at perfection.

So if you are aiming for say a 1.0 ohm coil and get a 1.15 or 0.85 ohm coil you have a couple options, if you find yourself on the low side add a coil or use a slightly larger mandrel to wind your coil, conversely if your above your target remove a coil or go with a slightly smaller mandrel.

You can in some cases adjust the leg length by positioning the coil nearer or farther away from the mounting points, but this may not be practical for many reasons.

If you can't adjust the coil size, add or subtract loops, use another guage wire; thicker wire has lower ohms than thinner wire for a given length.
