LOL ! I got told the same thing......afterwards !
No MK, Jeff enlisted in the mid 80s so definitely no agent orange, and his father was in basic training stateside when he was conceived so he's not an AO baby either. He did however serve on a base that was issued a 7003 by the EPA before it was shut down in the BRAC closures. There was a plume of benzene in the groundwater that emanated from the fuel storage 5 blocks from his dorm. We're looking into that, but it would be quite a fight if we chose to submit it. Jeff is however ruled 90% disabled due to other things, so the VA takes care of all his medical, including the new meds for the CML, thank goodness. The stuff is $5700.00 a month off insurance.![]()
Storm, this is very interesting to me. I used to work for the EPA, in the planning and oversight of the remediation of federal Superfund sites; mainly DOE sites but ......what base? The key is whether there are any cancer or other significant health data clusters in the area. Since base populations are so transient this can be hard to establish. Are there other complaints?
Wow, that's so cool that you worked for the EPA Lisa. It was Reese Air Force Base, and truthfully I'm not far enough into my digging as of yet to know if there are any other health problems reported. We knew that Reese had been sited not long after we married and transferred to another base, but it was simply one of those facts that you file away until a couple of weeks ago. Once Jeff was diagnosed, life became a conglomeration of doctors' appointments and research. It was during that research that I started noticing the scattered reports that benezene exposure could trigger leukemia in general. That brought back the memories of what had happened at Reese, so I looked it up. The actual 7003 was due to a groundwater plume of TCE that had traveled 2.5 miles off base and contaminated 40 private wells. There was also another plume of TCE in a separate area, as well as the Benzene plume. That's as far as I've gotten since tests and treatment have taken a front seat. I'm also not sure exactly where to turn next. Any suggestions?
Yes. Wow, those are nasties. The fact that it contaminated private wells is a big help (but sorry it happened!), since dealing with local government is far easier than dealing with the feds. The first place I would start is with the local health department. They may refer you to the state health department, but that's ok. My guess is that since so many private wells were contaminated that there was probably a study performed by one of them that tracks cancer cases to determine if there is a statistically significant cluster within the given area. The TCEQ may have something on health studies (if there are any) but they would have probably obtained it from the health department. The other information they definitely have somewhere if private wells were contaminated are the levels found in the water......both groundwater sampling and end user (at the tap).
I'm sure the feds have plenty of info from the base regarding onsite contaminant levels before and after remediation, and also the results of ongoing monitoring for a period of time, but that may be harder to get directly from them. In fact, the health department(s) should have that data.....
So, that's the basic approach. I'm going to do a little digging out of curiosity. And - I still have contacts![]()
Mike starts radiation on the 10th. I am so tired of waiting..I know he is ready to get it started so he can get it over with.
He is really getting hot flashes now. He can't sleep more then two hours without getting up and cooling off. We are doing cool cloths on his neck and we are thinking about a cool pad thing I saw at the CVS..suposed to stay cool inside your pillow without refridgeration. He can't take any thing to help with the hot flashes because he needs the cocktail of hormones and meds to work.
...when I was flashing...I'd just hop in the shower for a few minutes !
One more week!! I think you will both be relieved when that part is over. What is after that?
I need one of those pillows!!
You're a flasher![]()
