I'm looking to set my boyfriend up with a good but inexpensive small mod that takes rechargeable 18650s, and a tank with an RBA deck (I will be building the coils for him until he learns - we don't have the funds to constantly buy pre-built coils).

I'm hoping you guys can help me pinpoint my options. This will be a gift, but my money is tight so I can't spend a ton. For this reason, something that comes as a kit would be ideal, like the Topbox/Subox Mini kit for example -- I use the Topbox Mini kit myself currently, and I like it, but I'm looking for other options to weigh against it.

I'm having a hard time finding other kits that are similar in terms of the tank having an RBA section and the mod taking 18650s (as opposed to a non-removeable battery)... I don't mind buying these items separately, but I'm a bit out of the loops these days as to what is worth buying on the lower end of the price spectrum.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The TFV8 baby beast is a 22mm tank with an option RBA deck. I just got mine today and I enjoy it so far, but I don't have the deck yet. Someone here told me they are easy to build on. Not sure of price because mine came with the Smok Alien kit.

As for mods, I'm pretty sure you can buy a PICO without the tank for less than $30. You should be able to get both of those for less than $60.

I second the Pico, but I would pair it with the Goblin mini v3 (+ tank extender), entire package is a bit more than $50,- on FT, and very versatile (single and dual coil, 2ml and 4 ml), and easy to use
I love the Sapor (22 mm version) on one of my Picos, but it's a dual coil atty. A single coil would be better for a single-battery mod. I might try out the Goblin Mini v3 myself at some point.

I highly recommend it, together with Bellus and Merlin my favorite!

I don't own any single battery mods besides mechs but as mentioned above tbe Pico and an rta would fit the bill. The Merlin or the Goblin Mini V3 are great RTAs that are easy to build on.
We have threads on both with build/wicking pics. The Goblin Mini V3 comes with a single and dual coil deck.

I would not recommend the Merlin. It is a great RTA but there are way too many seepage issues. Don't want to turn him off if he is just starting vaping. If you want something really small, you can try a Smoant Knight V2. You would need to order it from China as it is not available in the US. I have two of them and they work really well. Atty that it comes with is not the greatest but it will take a Subtank RBA.

$45.99 Authentic Smoant Knight V2 80W TC VW APV Mod Kit - 4.5ml / 1-80W / 100-300'C(200-600'F) / 0.5ohm / 1*18650 at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

$2.42 Replacement RBA Plus Coil Head for SUBTANK Mini Clearomizer - 0.3ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

I think the pico /toptank is a very good suggestion different mod so you learn a little but a tank you are familiar with so you can help get him set up. If you get a different tank one of you will have to wait till you get it figured out. Buy a different tank later and you can use your current tank while you figure out your new one.

Joyetech eVic AIO is another option. Personally I like the eGrip 2 better- it's less of a juice hog and they do make a RBA for it too but it doesn't come with the mod- sold separately. The eGrip 2 is the best mod I've used in the 6 years I've been vaping with possibly the exception of a Reo but then the eGrip 2 is just easy...the Reo takes some tinkering quite a bit of the time.
