Mini Protank II - What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone! Totes new to posting, but have been lurking for awhile. I've been vaping since just before Christmas so pretty new to all of it but haven't smoked since! Awesome.

I'm struggling to find my perfect setup - I am currently using ego style batteries and just want a small, preferably glass clearomizer/tank that is reliable, produces good vape, lasts awhile, etc etc... and once I find the perfect one, I want to have several so I can easily satisfy my flavor ADD.

Anywho... the Mini Protank II. What the hell with this thing? I bought one originally and started using it with an Absolute Virgin liquid from Virgin Vapors. It constantly gurgled, got liquid in my mouth, had dry hits.... I took it apart and cleaned and dried it, same thing. Not really knowing what I was doing, I took it back to the store and the guy tried it with the same results, then told me it might be my liquid, ultimately gave me a new one, which was surprising, and let me keep the old one, which I intended to throw away.

New one seemed better.... but eventually same probs, with different liquids, some 50/50, 70/30, different flavors.... learned that I needed to keep them relatively full, vertical, sit for awhile after filling, all this fussiness... sometimes I can get one of them working well for a period of time, but then again at some point I'll get dry hits, flooding into the mouthpiece and my mouth, wet battery, and so on. Plus I think burnt liquid? I'm not sure but a sour taste when I don't think the liquid should taste that way? Tried cleaning, switching attys...

Am I doing something wrong? Did I get two duds? Or does this thing just suck? I also have 2 elego mini BCCs which have never been any kind of problem whatsoever with the same liquids... fill, hit, awesome, even if they lie horizontal forever. It seems crazy to me that these cheaper plastic things are working so much better than the pricier glass Kanger. What the what? It must be me! :glare:

Oh, man! I was going to make a post about my problems with this to ask what the hell is going on, but long story short, I got a mini protank 2, version 2, which is usually really, really great. And then I got a couple of mini protank 2, version 1, after I read somewhere that they are exactly the same, except that the v2 has a removable drip tip. In my experience, they are not at all the same. No! I've had a lot of trouble with the version 1, including a really really tight draw (I don't know what this is really called, but I feel like I'm sucking on a superlight cigarette; you just keep sucking and nothing happens), lots of gurgling, liquid in the mouth. I wondered if my v1 mini protank 2's are fake, because they seem SO bad.

I adore my mini protank 2 v2, but even it is fussy. I frequently have a problem of it not working at all when I switch it from a dying battery to a new one. It just stops. aaargh. Then I give it to my husband, who plays around with it a bit until it works, and even he doesn't know why. I love it but I hate it! but I love it. But the v1 minis I have I mostly just really hate. Hopefully someone who knows more will let us know what's up with these.

Just a guess - you may have crappy COILS.
IF it is a legitimate Kanger MiniProTank, it shouldn't do any of that.
I have a couple, and have found them to be the most troublefree, good-out-of-the-box clearomizers I've ever used, and I've used a bunch.
Try to make sure it's a Kanger. Try it with another coil.
Make sure there's no juice in the airtube.
Other than that - no you shouldn't get gurgles - until maybe it's ALMOST empty.
No you don't need to keep it upright.
No your juice isn't too thick.

Also, try to be certain the coils aren't really high resistance. If you can't turn up the voltage, you might want a 2.0 ohm coil, or even a 1.8 (that's what I use).

I'm new, so there's my warning with everything I'm going to type.

I have 2 mini protank 2 V2's. They both work amazingly well with my daily driven juice. It's a powerful menthol in an 85/15 PG/VG ratio. I do not chain vape it as it is throat closingly powerful. 3-4 triple 5-6 second puffs and I put it down. If I get the sweet/nasty hint of a dry hit, take 2-3 pulls on it off the button. Count to 3. Hit it again. And it is perfect. I got a higher VG version of this same juice (50/50) and I do cut them (together) to use up the 50/50 since by itself it doesn't cut it. That pushes me more into a 70/30 - 60/40 ratio and again. Everything works 100% of the time without so much more of a quarter drop on my battery. I never store it standing up either. So in this configuration I have absolutely perfect reliability with the MPT2v2.

The coil has lasted 2-3 weeks like this. I have not messed with it at all but to wash it out maybe 2-3 times. The flavor wick is unraveling. The coil isn't super clean. But the flavor and performance has been PERFECT. And it still doesn't leak. I have used 3 different drip tips as well with no difference in performance.

OK. Now the rest. The second one gets abused with a multitude of flavors and has been washed out a dozen times, including stamping the flavor wicks out in a paper towel and has been run with at least 10 juices. The coil has been replaced once already. Thin juices leak, AND gurgle. I have to turn up the power to 11 watts and do a burn to preheat the coil to actually get a real vape out of it. This is the EXACT same shoddy experience I've had with the T3's except, the PT tastes better no matter what. It also doesn't leak when you pull the coil base to refill, and the T3 always does for me.

In the end this is going to require tuning. Much like a car, to the juice that is going in that tank. Thinner juices are going to REQUIRE a thicker flavor wick, or one that is in perfect order to help "SEAL" the coil chamber cup from filling up with such a thin juice. This is the only way. If you are using a really thick juice. Try not seating the cup 100% on the atomizer head. A lot of people have suggested pulling the flavor wick in drastic situations. But be aware, if you have a gap where liquid can FLOW instead of WICK, it will leak, the cup will flood. And the atty will gurgle and pop. (liquid in the mouth) There is some tuning of the silicone cap that slides over the stem cap too.

Sounds annoying. But if you get a juice, or set the coil up to the juice you want to use. The MPT2 is absolutely great. It just doesn't have a wide threshold in which it will work great with a wide variety of viscosity juices. Or, conversely repeated vaping.

Make sense?

It doesn't sound anyone is doing anything wrong, I always had the same issues with protank coils. They were very inconsistent, sometimes they hit great other times they were completely useless and considering the price of em and how quickly I went through them I couldn’t justify buying them anymore. The only fix that I found for these coils is to rebuild them which will eliminate gurgling and dry hits plus vapor and flavor is greatly improved. There is a ton of information on the forums and on youtube on how to rebuild them.

Welcome Soylent Taupe to ECF. When I first started with the Protank 2 I had the same issues. I tried different coils and got the gurgling and e-liquid in my mouth.

I cleaned everything out and got the same results. So after putting in yet another new coil and it happened I took a pipe cleaner and pushed it thru the drip tip and down the shaft moving the pipe cleaner in a circular motion ( e-liquid still in tank ). That seemed to do the trick.

Good Luck to You.

I use a 50/50 blend with no flavor wick at all on my mpt's and they work fine. I dry burn every day or two though. I had a knock off protank 2 that flooded when I removed the flavor wick. I just made a flavor wick out of cotton I pulled off a cotton swab and rolled in my fingers. worked fine after that. I got an ego twist to use with the 2.5ohm coil that came in them since a non vv wasn't hot enough and run it about 4 or

I had the same issues with mine and after much research, I discovered it was the coils. What I did was learn to rebuild the coil using cotton for the wick and now, I do not experience any dry hits, gurgling, or flooding. I should also mention that I verified with the serial number that my tanks were legit Kangertech. Also Kangertech stamps their coils with the resistance which mine had as well. I also tried removing flavor wicks, flipping the silicone cap on the chimney upside down, etc with no success. Rebuilding the coil was the only thing that resolved all issues 100% for me.

Hi, and welcome. I'm new here too and have only been vaping for about two weeks. My setup is an ego style battery with a mini protank 2. I have been having great success with it but have had the same problems that you described on two occasions. For me I think the problem was due to smoking it outside in single digit weather while at work and then moving inside where it is warm.. I figured that the liquid contracted when cold then expanded in the atomizer when inside where it was warm. I now leave it inside and only step outside to vape it. Unfortunately the companies policy is that even e-cigs have to be used in regular smoking areas.

Another thing to consider is how tight or loose you are screwing it together. If too tight, you might break the seals and have a leak. Try just snugging everything together, not too loose and not too tight. I am using Virgin Vapor e-liguid too. I'm not having any problems with it while avoiding temperature extremes. Let me know how the above suggestions work for you.

Here is a picture of my e-cig. 140119_0003.jpg

I have 2 Mini PT2s and two of the Mini Unitanks (they use the same coils) and I haven't had any issues with any of them. The only time I had gurgling and a mouthful of fluid was with the tank that came with my EVOD starter after using a Cinnamon/Menthol juice. I later learned that the cinnamon and some of the strong menthol juices can weaken the seals and cause this (that tank went out the car window after leaking all over me).

The only time I've had any issues with my mini protank 2 was when a shop sold me a box of knockoff coils. I had trouble getting them to fit into the base correctly, then issues with dry hits and funky bad flavor. When I went back to using the genuine Kanger coils in them, everything has been great. I have 2 mini's and they're my favorite tanks so far.

All of the protank coils can use a very simple "tuneup"

The silica wick over the coil wick sometimes gets loose or is too tight and either results in dry hits or gurgling

A very easy process to fix it is available
You need some organic cotton and a pair of nail clippers

1. Remove the chimney and rubber cap
2. Remove the silica wick over the coil (leave the wick inside the coil)
3. Take a tiny strip of cotton roll it into a string the same width as the coil
4. Lay across the coil
5. Replace the chimney and cap catching the cotton under it
6. Snip the extra off with nail clippers
7. Reassemble, let it sit for a few seconds to wick the juice into the cotton
8. Vape Yo Face Off!!! :D

I'm new here and to vaping, but I had a similar experience with one particular juice. Overall I love my mini, and it's what goes with me when I leave the house. I figured it just doesn't like certain juices, so I don't use them in the PTM2.

Never thought of replacing the flavor wick with cotton, I'll have to try that. Thanks WarHawk-AVG.
