I was just watching a local news report (New England Cable News) and they were talking about the state wanting to raise the smoking age to 21. While the law will cover vaping because this state lumps vaping in with smoking, the report made it sound like vaping caused all the same effects as smoking. During the report, they started to list the number of deaths, cancer rate etc. for smoking while the whole time showing people vaping in the background. It was entirely misleading and if you weren't paying attention, you would think they were reporting that vaping causes cancer.
I have written the following letter but since I'm not exactly a poet, I thought I would throw it up here for quick critique. I will wait an hour (9:45 EST) until I send this off. If any one else in New England has a moment, please send them a not an let them know that vaping works!
This morning I was watching your report on raising the age to purchase tobacco. During the report, while the announcer was speaking of the dangers of tobacco use, you showed images of people using an electric vaporizer while talking about the cancer rates etc. of smoking. This is a grossly inaccurate portrayal of electronic vaporizers. There is no evidence what so ever that vaporizers contribute in ANY way to the diseases or symptoms that the voice over was saying.
Electronic vaporizers have now become the number one method for people to cease tobacco use (including myself). Vaporizers are saving lives every day and your imagery and commentary may very well be stopping people from trying something that could end their deadly tobacco use. I find this not only highly misleading reporting, but also highly irresponsible.
While Vaporizers may be lumped in with tobacco by the state for the purposes of regulation, they are entirely different substances and actions and most certainly don't have the same detrimental effects. Showing images of vaping while using the descriptions of diseases related to tobacco use is irresponsible and could prevent people from stopping tobacco use. I hope you consider these facts in your future reports.
Thank you,
