Yeah you can modify it. If you have an old stick batty(cig look alike with auto draw) and can spare taking it apart. it shows you a pretty cut and paste diagram of the auto switch, battery and atty connector. The thing with mods with auto switches is that they are usually on a mosfet chip. Which allows the tiny switch to handle the current through it... if your placing in a tactile switch you are more than likely using one rated for 2-5 amps and wouldnt need the mosfet. Getting to the point...
open it up. disconnect everything.
I'm assuming it has 2 separate contact points for the battery area. run a wire for where the negative side of the battery would sit, to the tactile switch.
From the tactile switch to the outer side of the atty connector.
Then run another wire from the positive side of the battery(nipple) to the center post in the atty connector.

That should do it, but with out fiddling with the exact device I couldnt help any further.
