The button most likely really needs a thumb to press comfortably, and not an index finger. It would be better to do that on the other side so it is still thumb friendly. Remolding the plastic doesn't sound pleasant, it would be better to start fresh with another material and have it your way from the get go.

Wouldn't it be great if SmokTech decides to sell the PCB instead for less than the price of the whole box? I'll probably go the route of building my own box if modding the gripper doesn't go well.

If they came out with this, then I wouldn't even bother modding.

You could certainly strip it and put into something nicer, that is for sure. The way you have it there in the last version is better as you can hold it without fingertips constantly on the voltage buttons and just glance down at the screen. If it has those finger grooves you are rather forced to hold it a certain way. If it has a rubbery finish it is rather hard to DIY changes and keep that intact.
