Mods newbie questions re: the MVP2 and Clearomizers

Hello everybody! So I've taken my first steps to start my 3rd attempt at vaping. After scouring the forums and reading all kinds of advice, I've got some good liquids and an iTaste MVP 2 headed my way in the mail (incidentally, I think I got a very good deal - eciggity had it on sale for $39.98 and there's a standing reddit discount code of "reddit10" that got 10% off). The starter kit I got has the iClear 16 tank and a USB charger, but I know I'm gonna need more stuff, I just don't know what exactly and how much...

First question, any advice on what else I should get for it? I'm presuming a USB car charger and USB wall plug - are there any power concerns I should be on the lookout for, or should pretty much any plugs sold on a vaping site be appropriate for the MVP2? Then with the tanks, do I need to get mouthpieces, or are they built into the tanks?

Then, should I stick with the iClears for the tanks? Pretty much the only thing I was able to translate out of all the ECF terminology is that the difference between the iClear 16 and the iClear 30 is the size, but there are the iClear 30 S's and the iClear 30 B's that I completely don't understand at all.

Finally, whatever tanks I go with, I'm a little worried about maintenance or using them too long without doing something. I was reading through the MVP2 posting on tips, and I got a little freaked out when people were talking about using a drill bit to widen holes on something…then more talk about a cleaning ritual of soaking something in vodka or some other stuff like that. I definitely don't think I could handle that kind of upkeep. If I went with the iClear's 30 or 16 or S or B or whatever, can I pare it down to something simple, like switching out for a new tank every few weeks?

Sorry for the question overload and the rambling…I imagine I'm just overcomplicating stuff, but I also want to do everything I can to make this attempt successful.

Ok. Let's start from the top. :) Any mini USB charger will work. I use the one from my cell phone a lot.
Mouth pieces come with the 16's
Yes. There is a difference between the 16's and the 30's. The 30's have more wicks (16) and the 16's have 4 wicks. Please don't ask me to do the math. :D The 30s has an "enclosed" wicking system and the 30b is a dual bottom coil. All 3 - 30's have different coils and are not interchangeable.

Think about a Kanger Mini Pro II Kanger mini Protank II (Static Tip) - Sun-Vapers.com or an Evod Kanger eVod Clearomizer | fully rebuildable bottom coil $5.99. Easy to clean, uses the same single coil wick but the mini is a glass tank and the evod is a polycarbonate so be cautious with flavors with cinnamon and menthol.

Add: Something else to keep in mind. The 16's and the 30 have a somewhat tighter draw than the Mini or Evod. It's like drinking a milkshake through a straw or a soda through a straw. Maybe not to that extreme but you get my drift

Any other questions, feel free to ask. We're here to help. :)

Happy Vaping!! :vapor:

Good choice with the mvp 2. You shouldn't need a car charger for it. The battery is very large and lasts most people all day. I would suggest getting glass tanks that take protank heads. They are cheap and easy to get, they can also be rebuilt. I clean my tanks and wicks about once a week or so. I soak them in warm water for a few hours, then let them soak in vodka for 12 hours or so. No need to drill anything.
Look at these:
HyperTank
And
http://shop.desertvapes.com/Vision-Victory-BCC-VS-VCTRY.htm
Both these tanks use standard pt heads Stardust v3 Replacement Coils

the mini pro tanks are 2 small, you will spend all your time filling it

That has nothing to do with the MVP itself; that's to do with the tank.
If you don't want to clean your coils for reuse, then you just keep buying coils and replacing; I recommend you just drop your used coils in a bottle or can for now; I'm guessing eventually you'll be glad you kept them;

Should you stick with the iclears?
Short answer, no; they just came along with the MVP; consider alternatives; noteably look for a glass tank.

For low maintenance, tanks, you should consider a cartotank system. Cartos are meant to be used and tossed/replaced; no maintenance.

Start easy, no need to get too esoteric about vaping. IMHO there is nothing wrong with the iClear 30 tank. Yes, there are tanks that I prefer, but they are perfectly adequate.

Clearomizers should be cleaned after a couple tanks or so...and certainly if you are going to try a different flavor.

What you hear a lot about are cleaning the coil/wick assembly. The coil (which is the coil and wick) does indeed wear out and/or gunk up after awhile and you will need to either clean it, or replace it. Some folks just throw out a coil as soon as its performance falls off and replace it with a new one, but you can get a lot more mileage by cleaning them.

Wow, great suggestions so far! Thanks!

Simply Red - you mentioned something about being careful with menthol in regards to glass and polycarbonate tanks. I am a menthol smoker, and most of my liquid will probably be some form of menthol. Would the mini or evod not be good choices for me then?

As to the other options… I'm not adverse to paying a little bit more to make my life easier. If it means buying a new $13 or whatever tank every 3 weeks to avoid the hassle of cleaning it or replacing parts, I'm fine with that. If there's a model of tank that I can use for a couple of months by just popping off a head or something and putting in a $3 replacement one or something, that's fine, too. The eventual goal is to get off analogs, and I spend about $200 per month on them, so anything less than that is a savings, even if I'm not being as frugal a vaper as I could be. As to cleaning, as long as it's something simple like soaking it overnight in alcohol a couple times a week, that's fine too…I just know that if I have to sit there and clean the damn thing every other night, I'm going to get frustrated, say screw it and go buy a pack of marbs. Bottom line, I'm lazy, and I hate it, but I at least know myself well enough to admit it. :p

The reason I was looking at the clearomizers vs. cartomizers is that from what I've read the th and overall quality is better with clearomizers, or am I getting the wrong impression with that? Also, back to the MVP2 sort of, I'm seeing a lot of stuff on tanks dealing with the ohms…like a 1.8 ohm version vs. a 3.0 ohm version, that kind of thing. What is the difference there, particularly when using the VV and VW aspects of the MVP2? (I'm no physics major or anything, but I at least want to know enough not to make the device explode on me :p )

The mvp is a vv/vw mod the ohm is not that important, you are able to change the volts to match tho ohms, or set the vw and should be about the same for all ohms. 8.5 watts is a good starting point. The 2 tanks I listed above take little cleaning and maintenance. I wouldn't do it either. Once every 3-10 day is fine depends how much juice you put threw them. Important tip make sure your coils dry before reusing them, vodka drags are terrible.
Your best bet is to get 3 new tanks and 10 new heads. This should last you at least 3 month with minimum cleaning, and the tanks will last much longer. I have been vaping 4 90 days and have only thrown out 4 or 5 heads.

The carto tanks are more work to fill. Not terribly difficult, but more work.

Rosenec - Thanks for the breakdown! So just to make sure I understand correctly, using your suggestions, I would get:

Like 3 of these: Disposable Stardust -Blue
And around 10 of these: Stardust v3 Replacement Coils

And with those two things, the MVP2 unit itself, and my choice of liquid, I wouldn't need anything else for a couple months? Meaning, like I just attach the tanks and it already has the part I suck from to actually vape attached, and then just replace the coils every now and then?

Oh, and last question, how would I know when it's time to replace the head, and then after that how would I know when it's time to replace the whole tank?

That's all you will need.
The heads are tricky, they go slowly. After awhile they stop producing good vapor/flavor.
The tank will last till you lose it or break it. You may have theses for the rest of your life
I would get the 2.2 ohm coils

The mini is a glass tank and will do fine for menthol. If you wanted a larger capacity tank that's glass, the Kanger Pro, Pro II and Aerotank are also glass. I use Sun Vapers is a premium Kanger reseller in San Diego County. quite a bit and I'm sure there are other manufactures of glass tanks out there. I'm just using them as an example. You can go to their web site and put "Kanger" in their search and compare. But, in answer to your question, glass tanks (mini pro II) would be the way to go for menthol. Look at the reviews and it will help in making a decision.

Good luck & Happy Vaping!! :vapor:

Add: VV/VW and ohms. Oh MY!! Not a big deal. The ohms is what your coil will be whether it be 1.8, 2.2 or 2.5. Check what comes with the tank you get. It will be itty bitty etching on the side at the bottom of the coil. Once you've found that, and your tank is filled and on your MVP, it's time to set your VV or VW (I use VV myself) This will help: http://www.cigtechs.com/VoltsOhms-Watts_ep_48.html.

All of this will seem overwhelming to start with but once you get set up, it's really a piece of cake. :)

If you need more help, don't be afraid to ask. We're here to help! :D

Replacing the head - when it stops producing vapor or you start to get a burnt taste. Like Rosenic said, the tank when you lose it or break it.

1: Get a good glass tank; by the sounds of it you don't want to be wondering whether the particular flavor you have is reacting with your plastic tank.
- The EVOD's are plastic tanks; they have a metal jacket outside;
- the miniprotank is a glass tank; the miniprotank2 is a glass tank plus you can put whatever mouthpiece you want on it- important because the metal irritates some people on the lip;
- the smoktech aro is a glass tank plus it has the metal jacket like the EVOD.
These three tanks mentioned above use the outer eGo threads to screw on; its a more solid connection, that gives a consistent airflow, whereas with 510 threaded tanks, the airflow has to compete with the mechanics of the threading althogher with the electic connection within a small confined space of the 510 well which is easily flooded by what would seem a tiny amount of fluid leakage.

2: replacement coils usually cost a dollar; 5 dollar a 5 pack or thereabouts. So for starters you can just buy and replace coils; I think I suggested already, you dont have to make a point of throwing away the coils you might find use for them later; they're small; a hundred would fit in a soft drink bottle.

3: $200 a month: AHA!! That defines your vaping budget: I normally recommend budgeting for HALF of what you used to spend on cigarettes: so in your case, your budgets I would recommend
$100 a month. - thats TOTAL, hardware and eliquids.
After a year of not smoking, then you want your vape budget to drop to 10% of what you used to spend on cigarettes - so $20 per month on eliquids. ymmv.

4: When you are starting out, you have alot other things that impact performace than ohms; I say just stick to middle of the road mainstream- basically 2 ohms.

I wish I had all the Iclear 30's that are sitting drawers. I like mine a bunch. They are very easy to clean and dry burn between flavor changes. I vape a 650/50 mix and have never had a dry hit. They produce a nice warm vape but like most dual coil units they use a little more juice. If your MVP comes with a Iclear 30 give it good chance you may like it as many do.

i would go with a carto dct 510 tank.. but thats for my pen the ego v 2.. i havnt looked at the mvp's much.. just got my upgrade to my variable voltage pen a few days ago.. i dont have to clean them.. or poke holes.. the cartomizers just replace the center core piece.. costs about 5 bucks for a 5 pack.. i have 2 tanks.... so that usually gets me through a month of continuouse vape... im waiting for my other 3 tanks to arrive.. the new locking u-dct pyrex tanks from smoktech... hopefully they live up to the hype i have heard... VAPE ON
