kwcharlie,
You shouldn't use IGBT as they have high Vce_sat. More - what would be your 555 feedback for PWM regulation? The only reasonable feedback should be Vbat. Note that more of 555 do NOT work correctly at voltages under 4V! I'm not sure , but maybe TI have a 555 working down to 2V ??????
Ralph,
I think this idea limps - you should have enough time to vapour the liquid.

I have a pwm ic laying around somewhere also but that may be overkill if I remember correctly it was rather expensive also.

Speaking of Houston I want to move to the Houston area in the worst way, still trying to convince my wife. I live in Wisconsin the snow is really getting on my nerves, snowed a couple of inches friday night. That and I am a Linux and Oracle clustering expert, I need to get in a area that has a little more demand for high performance computing.

until last year and $30 oil it would have been a 'no brainer' for someone with your skills. Things down now, I'm taking jobs in Nigeria and flying coach, but it will come back, the oil patch is always looking for bit-heads to keep power EE's like me from making a job FUBAR'ed, i get lost after statement language and most of the people i work for have to have ladder logic.
I came down here 40 years ago from indiana after Nam, know about that snow

Just kidding about the IGBT, wasn't thinking about FB yet, just want to make a 'knob' to vary the power to the att.
just going to use the 555 to generate the gate/base PWM signal becouse i have it with a knob on it, may just use the SG but can't hot glue it to the PG test stand, we'll see about that after i get a transistor switch built after i see the current it will have to handle.
AND of course how it vapes
