I found this online a few minutes ago. I'm not affiliated with them, have no skin in the game.

http://projectease.moffitt.org

Recruiting participants started today, 7-11-16. Contact information in the link above. I grilled two of the researchers at length. My conclusion is, if you are a dual user, interested in helping to study this subject, give them a call and see if they can persuade you to participate. My impression from the two people I talked to, including the project manager, is they would be delighted if their study found as much cause for optimism about ecigs as we feel. Moffit is a name we've heard before.

I am not a dual user so I can't participate. I'll be interested to hear feedback from anyone here who talks to them.

Researching dual users seems kinda shady to me. If someone is doing research for the benefit of vaping they wouldn't taint the subjects with cigarette intake. I don't see any outcome from this that would benefit vaping.

I agree, even something as simple as different brands of cigarettes having different chemicals/toxicity would completely throw off the study.

It is not, I believe, the type of study to determine safety or long term health effects. The study appears to be geared to answer how many current smokers exposed to vaping will convert to vaping only, supporting the theory that vaping will help people stop smoking.

Looking at vapers only gives you no idea of the conversion rate among smokers. Vapers only are by definition 100% "converted". This is a simple "what happens to a smoker when they try vaping?" study. Which in itself is pretty valuable when you gather prospective data showing a higher percentage of smokers transitioning away from cigarettes, especially compared to NRTs or other apporved drugs (that aren't too great to begin with).

Almost everybody is a dual user for some time. That was me for 6 weeks. A brother of mine, 10 months. The study caught my eye because they are interested in dual users. I like to say to smokers, don't worry about quitting smoking. Just start vaping. If you vape you'll smoke less. If you never stop vaping eventually you'll stop smoking. Understanding dual users better is worthwhile.

What I proposed is, if you're a dual user get in touch, see what they propose and decide for yourself if you want to help them.

Here is a press release that talks about the study.

Study goal: "To date, little is known about how e-cigarette use changes over time or how it affects the use of traditional cigarettes. Such information would be valuable for understanding the long-term impact of e-cigarettes and for determining whether e-cigarettes help or hinder smoking cessation."

To study only dual users to this end is flawed data. My guess is their conclusion will lean heavily towards hinder cessation given the group they chose to study, by design no doubt.

My impression of them is they are genuinely interested in valid science but the way they are going about this might limit the conclusions they can make and that could go either way. A person participating in a study will be more self conscious of their dual using and more likely to stop dual using so it might skew the study the other way. Mentoring is a significant part of what happens with vapers. Participating in a study is a form of mentoring.
