My husband and I are flying out of Montreal on Friday, and we'll be driving to the airport. It seems like we'll be fine as far as traveling with eliquid, and I'm bringing printouts from Health Canada, so we should be fine.

BUT are there any other rules we need to know about within Quebec? Are there any indoor vaping bans?

I don't speak French all that well- and want to stay out of trouble for the few hours we'll be there.

Also, in reading the regs it appears that nicotine is non-prescription as long as it's in a natural product. Why not stock all-natural nic liquids?? Just putting that out there to the vendors who are affected by the HC regs. I'm sure it's been thought of, but unflavored all VG liquid seems very legal.

Thanks!!!

To the best of my knowledge, Quebec doesn't have any laws that regarding ecigs as neither do any of the other provinces in Canada, so you should be fine.

What comes into play is owners of establishments/stores have the right to refuse service to anyone for whatever reason they wish so it would seem wise to ask before use or ask for forgiveness after...

And the fact that likely they wouldn't know what a ecig is as the awareness in Canada is on the low side as Health Canada has not approved the use of them and advises against them currently.

Have a read here:

Have a good safe trip.

Hi SuziesMom. Hope you & your husband will have a fun trip.

I'm certainly no expert on Quebec, having only been there twice in my life. But I'm certain there are no vaping bans in any public places in Canada. It would be very newsworthy if there were. No-smoking laws literally have zero effect on vaping, because vaping is not smoking. There's no tobacco, no combustion, and no smoke whatsoever. There is no law anywhere in Canada that prohibits vaping.

But bear in mind that many places we think of as public are not truly public: a Timmies, a shopping mall, a bar, etc. A plane. These are privately owned places that are made open to the public, provisionally. So it's perfectly legal for some guy to walk around downtown without a shirt on. But if he walks into a fancy restaurant that way, they're within their rights to tell him to get outta there.

Your best bet is to exercise the better part of valour. If you're indoors, but not in a public place...don't vape unless you really need to, & exercise some level of discretion if you do. You can often get a feel for a place beforehand...whether they'll be cool or not. Just turn on your vape-dar.

If someone objects...you can explain what it is & if need be, stop. No one can ask for more than that. I don't think you'll have a problem though. Most places & people are pretty cool. Several months ago in February, I vaped openly in Pearson Airport for at least two hours, almost three...and not one person even gave me a funny look, let alone asked me what I was doing.

Fortunately I no longer get those super-intense nic-fits we all remember from back when, when we absolutely needed a cig that very minute or else. As a vaper, I'll always love & enjoy nic. But nowadays I can go hours without a vape, without it bothering me. Odds are the same is true for you...and if it isn't, odds are that no one will give you grief over your vaping. And if they do, odds are that you'll be able to step out somewhere to vape.

As to nicotine & Schedule F exemptions...you're right that exemption (a) exempts nicotine "in natural substances." This is what allows tobacco - a natural substance - to be exempt.

But while PG & VG are organic products that are derived from natural substances...they are not natural substances in and of themselves. The nicotine that we vape is natural nicotine, in that it's extracted from tobacco. But PG w/nic, or VG w/nic, are not naturally-occurring forms. So exemption (a) does not exempt any e-liquid w/nic.

Fortunately, exemption (d) exempts nicotine "in a form to be administered orally by means of an inhalation device delivering 4 mg or less of nicotine per dosage unit." This exemption does cover the e-liquids w/nic that we vape with our e-cigs.

If you take a drag on your e-cig, you receive a dose of nicotine. Take two drags, you'll receive two doses, and so forth. That's a basic, measurable fact. Not even HC is arguing that. And as we all know...no one who vapes is getting anywhere near 4mg of nic from a drag, i.e. "dosage unit." It's physically impossible to get 4mg of nic from one vapourized drag of any of the juices we're vaping.

This exemption also covers a bottle of e-liquid, since the bottle contains numerous doses, and the intended use of the liquid is in compliance with the exemption. Intended use clearly counts for something, otherwise virtually nothing would be sold. Coffe, Tylenol, water - you name it - they all have an intended use, and outside of the intended use they could all be lethal.

Meanwhile, plain PG or plain VG without nicotine are completely unrestricted by any of this stuff.

---

Anyway...have a fun trip, and happy vaping!

I live in Mirabel, 30 mins north of Montreal. There are no rules as of yet... just like the rest of Canada. BUT I go by my one and only rule, I do not vape indoors in any public place, basically to stay out of trouble.

Outside, in a motel room, stealth vaping in a bathroom, in a car.. no problem. I even vaped in front of my family doctor in her office because she wanted too see what it was. Good thing is she agrees with it and would prescribe it! :p

Thank you!!!!!! My husband would never speak to me again if we got kicked out of Timmies- so guess I'll keep my shirt on, and stealth if I need to. ;) Unfortunately I'm still very much an addict, but I'm bringing gum for the plane, so that should help a little. It's not as bad as when I was on analogs, but without nic I get very sleepy and HUNGRY.

I saw Ron Jeremy at Pearson a couple of years ago- when I was out smoking. Made the stupid mistake of calling my Mother and telling her I saw him in the airport. Awkward- especially when she googled him while I was on the phone with her. Then she Facebooked it too- I think mainly to embarrass me. Mom's cool, but I forgot what he's really famous for. Whoops.

I vape everywhere... Never had MAJOR problems with it, except for a few .........
If someone comes to you and tells you its a "endroit non fumeur ici madame!", you just explain to him, like you would normally do, what is an e-cig.
Pretty much everyone speaks english here, so I wouldn't worry about the "I don't speak french" part :p

Ya, in public places that are privately owned, its best to stealth vape in bathrooms. On a plane, I would hide my PV deep in my bags, and buy Nicorette Gum. In full public, vape away unless there are no smoking signs up, but that's rare outside in Quebec. Have a great time!

NY is just fine...I'm Upstate in the sticks, and I've never been told not to vape anywhere. NYC didn't seem to be an issue either. Someone on here got cuffed by a cop who thought he had a one-hitter, but it was cleared up pretty quickly. I'm in a college town- our cops KNOW what pipes look like.

I'm clean-cut, polite, and tip well, so never any issue. I'm discreet about it, and we have REO's that sort of look like walkie talkies, so most folks don't know what they are anyway. It's nice to be able to vape at the table.

NJ has an indoor ban which cracks me up. You can see the smog cloud that hangs over the state miles from the border- yeah, NJ is really a state that takes air quality seriously.

I don't really anticipate any issues in Montreal either, but I'm so unfamiliar with that providence that I thought I'd ask. I already feel like there's one strike against me being a non-French speaking tourist, with a husband who was born in Iraq (many years ago...but we get some looks at the border when he shows his Finnish passport that says place of birth "Baghdad").

My experience in Montreal is that most folks speak English if you speak a little awful French :) Trying seems to go a long way.

HAHA.. My experience in Montreal is if you speak awful french, you're better of just speaking english as you'll get less stink-eye's and dirtly looks... Outside of Montreal though (Old Quebec City, or more rural areas) I find the people are more polite, and appreciate that you're at least trying. Eventually though they'll just smirk to them selves and tell you to speak english anyway because "your poor french hurts their ears".
