Is it like anything else? Can you tell what flavorings they use? Is it strong or mellow? Thanks for the heads up - looks like a cool site.
LT,
The
tobacco base in Moondrop's Straight Up line (
Straight Up, Caramel, Apple Cider, Clove, and
Menthol) is a natural extract made from macerated Bulgarian tobaccos. It gives each juice a caramel color with a slightly oily yellow-ish tint at the edges (making the juice appear almost green, which sounds awful but isn't). This oily tint reminds me strongly of Tobacco Absolute. I don't know if Moondrop uses any Absolute in their base flavoring, but I do know that at least one popular version of Tobacco Absolute is made from Bulgarian tobacco, so there are definite similarities. The juices don't taste like Absolute, however. For instance, I don't taste any ashiness at all in Moondrop tobaccos, and the end result is clearly unique, though difficult to describe.
The flavor is complex and earthy, with some elements that seem to combine floral and spicy. It is not, however, typically "flowery" or "perfumey." The taste is also not intense or overpowering (not "in your face," as some people might say), but it is substantial and solid, with a nice bite at 18mg. The overall flavor profile leans toward cigar with a slight nod to pipe tobacco, but not much, and nothing at all like the standard Dekang synthetic tobaccos. It's exotic in a way I find surprising and delicious.
Moondrops RY42---a stunning RY4-variant---uses a different natural tobacco extract than the Straight Up quintet, but the bases are more similar than different.
I've tried four of the six Moondrop tobaccos:
RY42, Straight Up, Straight Up Caramel, and
Straight Up Apple Cider. Although love affairs with new juices are notoriously fickle, my three weeks with these juices definitely qualify as a major infatuation. They're all great. Of the six, the one I'd most recommend to you is Straight Up Caramel. The Straight Up base is ever so slightly sweet, but mostly neutral, and the caramel adds just the right touch of extra sweetness on exhale. Yum.
Customer service is exemplary. When I placed my first order last month, shipment was delayed because of a glitch in their accounts software (my address was somehow missing from my account). The owner emailed me to get my address and apologize for the delay, and I emailed back to say that I understood about technical glitches and didn't blame anyone. He then included in my order a free 10ml bottle of juice and a complete 510 penstyle kit that sells on Moondrop's site for $20. That was $26 worth of freebies on an $23 order. To say that was generous is an understatement.
Moondrop recently improved their tobacco extracts and mixing procedure to minimize separation of particulates, and
every previous customer during their short time online was emailed with the offer of a new batch of whatever juices they had ordered---
for free! Again, that is above and beyond.
