Smaller gauge wire - say 32 gauge - heats up faster than larger gauge wire - say 28 gauge.
The faster heat (smaller wire) gives a quicker vape - but can fry some of the lighter or more sensitive juices.
28 gauge heats up slower (larger wire and less resistance per inch) and it is pretty hard to make the wires glow assuming there is any juice flowing at all.

28 gauge tends to have more throat hit - likely a function of more and larger wires.
I wrap a 4/5 on my zen with 32 gauge - an 8/9 with 28 gauge (not using a mech currently - one is on the way)
